Source: Press Release Service

Petdirect, New Zealand’s leading Kiwi-owned pet retailer, is proud to announce the exclusive launch of M-PETS, a globally recognised brand of high-quality, design-led pet essentials. Already available in over 70 countries, M-PETS is now officially and exclusively distributed in New Zealand by Petdirect, with a curated range of over 100 everyday products for cats and dogs and more coming soon.

While some M-PETS products may have trickled into the New Zealand market in the past, Petdirect now holds exclusive rights to the brand, giving Kiwi pet parents access to a growing range that has never before been locally available to New Zealanders.

“We’ve secured exclusive distribution of the M-Pets range in New Zealand, and we’re offering a curated selection of great value, quality items, and we’re planning to add more quickly.” says Dean Kippenberger, Head of Merchandise at Petdirect.

The M-PETS range, now available exclusively at Petdirect, features durable and stylish beds and grooming tools in multiple sizes, high-quality toys that support stimulation and enrichment, as well as functional and aesthetically pleasing feeding, travel and hygiene products.

Thoughtfully designed, every product combines quality, safety and modern aesthetics – without the premium price tag.

“Some retailers may have stocked a few M-PETS product in the past, but no one has offered the width of range and invested in stock as we have,” states Kippenberger. “By owning the range locally, we’re able to deliver better value, greater consistency and a much broader assortment than ever seen in NZ.”

The launch comes as new insights from Petdirect’s 2024 Pet Census highlight just how much Kiwis are investing in their pets. Over a third of pet owners report spending more than $2000 a year, and many admit it’s more than they expected. Nearly four in ten say their pet costs exceed what they’d originally budgeted for, while others have adjusted their household spending to accommodate their furry family members.

“This is part of a wider strategy to rethink how Kiwis shop for their pets,” adds Kippenberger. “We’re focused on building a suite of exclusive quality brands that meet real needs – with great prices, quality and customer service. M-PETS sets the tone, and we’re only getting started.”

M-PETS is just the beginning. Petdirect is set to expand its portfolio of exclusive homebrands in 2025, reinforcing its commitment to offering smarter, higher-value options for New Zealand pet families.

What began as a small, homegrown initiative has rapidly evolved into one of New Zealand’s most trusted names in digital development. Ultimate Web Designs, known for its commitment to high-quality websites and personalised service, is making waves across the country—quietly but confidently reshaping the digital landscape for Kiwi businesses.

In a market often saturated with cookie-cutter solutions and offshore agencies, Ultimate Web Designs stands apart with a hands-on, transparent, and results-driven approach. Founded by two visionary entrepreneurs, the company has completed over 1,000 projects for businesses across New Zealand and Australia.

“We started this journey with a simple goal—to help businesses not just get online, but thrive online,” says Lakshay, Project Manager at Ultimate Web Designs. “Today, that vision is bigger than ever, and it’s being powered by a team that genuinely cares about results.”

While the company is best known for its striking websites and seamless mobile apps, its real strength lies in the long-term partnerships it builds with clients. With offices in both Auckland and Christchurch, and a reputation for five-star service, the company is now positioning itself for even bigger growth.

One key differentiator? Ultimate Web Designs does not outsource its work or collaborate with external digital agencies. Everything—from custom websites and eCommerce solutions to SEO, Google Ads, and app development—is done in-house, ensuring quality control and faster turnarounds.

As more businesses shift online and seek partners they can trust, Ultimate Web Designs is becoming a go-to name for those who value both creativity and accountability.

Auckland, New Zealand – MyForex.co.nz, a New Zealand-based website offering curated access to trusted forex-related products and services, has recently launched with a sharp focus on transparency, simplicity, and value for Kiwi traders. The new platform now also supports a growing Introducing Broker (IB) initiative, helping traders connect with reputable global forex brokers while benefiting from local support – all led by a seasoned forex trader.

As the online forex space becomes increasingly saturated with aggressive marketing and low-quality promotions, MyForex.co.nz stands out by providing a clean, no-nonsense portal. The site is built around the idea that Kiwi traders deserve clarity when choosing trading platforms, software, or broker partners – especially in an industry known for complexity and fine print.

“We’re not here to sell the dream. MyForex.co.nz is about offering a trusted starting point for people interested in forex – without the hype,” says the site’s founder, Dave White. “There’s real value in just being transparent and pointing people in the right direction.”

A Simple and Trusted Starting Point
MyForex.co.nz does not offer trading education, market predictions, or strategy guides. Instead, it provides something arguably more useful in today’s cluttered online trading environment: a curated directory of vetted, reputable forex services. “The sites content will be forever changing as we find new and exciting products and services that we know are legitimate” says Mr White.

Some of the products and services include:

Trusted brokers with international licenses and local client support. “These are brokers that we either use, or have used, and have great relationships with” says Mr White.

Forex tools and platforms that enhance the trading experience.

Funding platforms and education relevant to NZ-based users.

Third-party services offering value without hidden catches.

Mr White emphasised “we won’t hesitate to remove anything from the site if we believe they’re no longer legitimate, or have traders’ best interests at heart”.

Each listing on MyForex.co.nz is selected based on trust, reputation, and usefulness. The platform is proudly independent, and every recommendation is backed by real-world experience. Most of which have either been used by, or are still used by, the brains behind the site.

Introducing Broker (IB) Initiative Now Live
In addition to its core function as a product and broker gateway, MyForex.co.nz has launched its own Introducing Broker (IB) initiative. Through strategic partnerships with regulated global brokers, the site now acts as an intermediary that connects New Zealand traders to top-tier platforms – while offering added benefits such as:

Enhanced onboarding support

Lower trading costs or custom account features (where applicable)

Direct communication with real people, not faceless systems

This initiative reflects a growing global trend where independent publishers and consultants act as local bridges between traders and larger brokers – a model that benefits all parties involved.

“The IB model allows us to maintain our independence while still adding value,” says Mr White. “We’re selective about who we work with. If a broker isn’t good enough for our own use, it’s not good enough to recommend.”

A Local Solution in a Global Market
While forex is a global industry, most broker comparison websites are international, generic, and often confusing – making it hard for Kiwi traders to find reliable info that applies to their needs. MyForex.co.nz aims to fill that gap by offering a locally run, locally relevant platform with no pressure or gimmicks.

The site is particularly useful for:

Beginner and intermediate forex traders exploring broker options

Traders looking for regulated and reliable offshore platforms

NZ-based users seeking tools or services that actually work in our market

Importers/exporters or side-hustlers who want access to multi-currency platforms

With a straight-talking tone and minimalist design, MyForex.co.nz intentionally avoids clutter, hype, or over-promising. There are no secret systems or overnight success stories – just a clear pathway to start, or improve, your forex journey.

What’s Next for MyForex.co.nz?
Over the coming months, MyForex.co.nz plans to expand its network of broker partnerships, grow its New Zealand user base, and refine its platform to better serve the local community. The site will also provide ongoing updates to those registered through the IB service about changes in broker terms, platform features, and relevant services that affect NZ-based forex users.

“This is a long-term project for us,” Mr White adds. “We want to be known as the quiet but reliable guide in a very loud industry.”
To explore the platform or learn more about the Introducing Broker program, visit www.myforex.co.nz.

New Technology Reduces Waste and Costs in Building Maintenance
As buildings age, their exterior surfaces often deteriorate, leading to significant maintenance challenges. Traditionally, replacing ACM panels has been the go-to solution, requiring substantial financial investment and generating large amounts of waste. WRNZ is changing the landscape by offering an alternative that restores panels to a like-new condition without the need for removal.

“Our goal is to provide a more sustainable solution for property owners and developers,” says Ben Ravenhall, General Manager of WRNZ. “With our advanced spray technology, we’re extending the life of ACM panels while significantly reducing waste and costs associated with replacements.”
The cost-effectiveness of this technology has made it particularly attractive to commercial property managers, who are always looking for ways to extend the life of their building exteriors while adhering to budget constraints. The technology ensures that businesses do not have to sacrifice aesthetics for affordability, making it an ideal solution for retail spaces, office buildings, and multi-residential developments.

How WRNZ’s ACM Panel Restoration Works
The process involves applying a professional-grade coating designed specifically for ACM surfaces. Unlike traditional repainting methods, this technique ensures an even, long-lasting finish that withstands New Zealand’s demanding climate conditions. The result is a restored exterior that maintains its durability and appearance for years to come.

WRNZ’s coating technology has been tested for UV resistance, waterproofing, and anti-corrosive properties, ensuring that refurbished panels meet the highest industry standards. The process is also designed to be efficient, allowing businesses and property owners to complete upgrades without major disruption. It also eliminates the environmental impact of disposing of large quantities of ACM panels, reducing landfill waste and promoting a circular economy.

Making an Impact Across New Zealand
WRNZ’s ACM panel restoration service has already been implemented across a variety of commercial and residential projects. A recent refurbishment of an Auckland office complex demonstrated the effectiveness of the technology, as panels that had faded over time were restored to their original vibrancy. The project was completed in a fraction of the time and cost compared to full panel replacement, showcasing the potential of this innovative approach.
In addition to office buildings, the company has worked on shopping centres, apartment buildings, and educational institutions. With the increasing focus on sustainable building practices, WRNZ’s technology is attracting attention from architects and developers looking for greener alternatives to traditional renovation methods.

This technology is also gaining traction among architects and developers looking for environmentally responsible refurbishment options. With the global focus on reducing construction waste, WRNZ’s approach aligns with broader sustainability goals, making it an appealing choice for modern building maintenance.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
WRNZ has built a reputation for excellence in architectural coatings and refurbishment solutions, consistently pushing boundaries in sustainable building maintenance. Their team of specialists applies cutting-edge techniques to ensure high-quality results while prioritising environmental responsibility.
The company’s approach to innovation extends beyond ACM panels. WRNZ is exploring additional applications for its advanced spray coating technology, including the restoration of other architectural materials such as steel cladding and concrete façades. By investing in research and development, WRNZ is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable building refurbishment solutions.

“We believe that the future of building maintenance is in sustainable solutions,” says Ben Ravenhall – General Manager of WRNZ. “Our ACM panel restoration technology is just one example of how innovation can reduce environmental impact while maintaining the integrity of our built environment.”

Looking Ahead
As demand for sustainable refurbishment solutions continues to rise, WRNZ remains committed to expanding its services and refining its technology. Property owners, architects, and facility managers interested in learning more about WRNZ’s ACM panel restoration technology can visit https://wrnz.co.nz/ for more information.

The company also plans to collaborate with industry partners and government organisations to further promote sustainable building practices in New Zealand. With its forward-thinking approach and commitment to quality, WRNZ is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of architectural refurbishment.

About WRNZ
WRNZ is a New Zealand-based specialist in architectural spray coatings, offering innovative solutions for exterior refurbishment and panel restoration. With a focus on sustainability and quality, WRNZ is helping reshape how ACM panels and other architectural surfaces are maintained across commercial and residential sectors.

This evidence-based approach, modelled after the success of opioid replacement therapy, proposes legal access to prescription stimulants like Desoxyn and Vyvanse to mitigate addiction’s harmful effects.

New Zealanders spend 19.4 million a week on methamphetamine according to wastewater testing. Ms Brosnan emphasises that this policy could not only save lives but also reduce organised crime and drug-related violence.

“I’m committed to making this happen as it would positively impact the lives of so many around me. Who otherwise will continue resorting to anti-social behaviour to fund the crippling cost of their dependence.

It is criminal to withhold life saving support from members of our community when all of this crime, pain and suffering could be easily and inexpensively avoided”.

Ms Brosnan urges policymakers and the public to support this initiative, paving the way for a safer and healthier future for communities across New Zealand.

Source: Press Release Service

Napier Sailing Club’s junior sailors have once again demonstrated their strength on the national stage with an outstanding performance at the New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association Ranking Selection Regatta. Eight sailors from Napier’s Optimist program competed against the country’s best, with standout results from Jake Dickey (2nd place) and Blake Duncan (5th place), securing their spots among the top five sailors selected to represent New Zealand at the Optimist World Championships in Slovenia later this year. Impressively, all Napier sailors finished within the top 55 Sailors in New Zealand.

Blake Duncan’s selection marks his second consecutive year qualifying for the Team selected to represent Aotearoa, a testament to his dedication and skill. He will have the opportunity to compete again next year, solidifying his place as one of the country’s top young sailors.

A Legacy of Success Built on Dedication
Napier Sailing Club’s junior program, currently boasting 40 active Optimist sailors, is one of the most successful in New Zealand despite drawing from a small population. The club ranks as the third-best rated junior sailing program in the country (based on results over the last 20 years), a remarkable achievement considering the size and isolation of the region. This success is the result of two decades of dedication from volunteers, parents, and the wider club community. Napier Sailing Club understands that without junior sailors, the club is only one generation away from decline, making its commitment to youth sailing a top priority.
The club runs five Learn to Sail programs annually and has built a strong reputation for developing top talent. A key factor in its success is the strategic use of professional, international-quality coaching, led by program mastermind Adrian Mannering. The club also receives vital support from sponsors such as The Rodney Green Foundation, Theatrical Solutions and Kerbside Services, as well as parents who invest significant time and effort, traveling across the country up to 15 times a year as well as internationally for top-tier competitions.

Sailing: More Than Just a Sport
Beyond competition, sailing provides young athletes with physical and mental challenges that build resilience, discipline, and problem-solving skills. It keeps children active, engaged, and off screens while also instilling a sense of responsibility as they learn to care for and maintain their boats. The friendships formed through sailing are lifelong, forged through shared experiences on and off the water.
Sailing is also woven into the fabric of who we are. From the great Polynesian navigators who first sailed to Aotearoa using only the stars and ocean currents, to the modern sailors competing on the world stage, our connection to the sea is deep and enduring. It is through sailing that we explore, connect, and grow—just as our ancestors did before us.

A Club Committed to Growth and Sustainability
Napier Sailing Club is not only focused on competitive success but also on expanding access to the sport. Programs like the Runa and Kokohaha Schools Sailing Program—run in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Yachting New Zealand—along with the Sailability initiative, ensure that sailing is accessible to a diverse range of participants, including those with disabilities. The club’s exceptional facilities, which hosted the prestigious Optimist World Championships in 2011, provide New Zealand’s premier environment for both learning and high-performance training and racing. Additionally, all regattas at Napier Sailing Club adhere to a Clean Regatta policy, reinforcing a commitment to environmental sustainability.
With a strong foundation of dedicated volunteers, world-class coaching, and an unwavering focus on junior development, Napier Sailing Club continues to punch well above its weight, securing its place as a powerhouse of New Zealand junior sailing.

Join Napier Sailing Club Learn to Sail Program
The September School Holiday Learn to Sail program is now open for bookings, with only 24 spots available. Bookings are essential and must be confirmed. Additional Learn to Sail programs will be held in December (post-school) and late January (before Term 1 starts). Napier Sailing Club are currently taking bookings—don’t miss out on the opportunity to get involved in this fantastic program!

Driving under the influence (DUI) remains one of New Zealand’s most persistent and preventable public health challenges. According to the New Zealand Transport Agency, alcohol-impaired driving contributes to nearly 30% of fatal road crashes annually. Beyond the stark statistics lies a deeper issue: the profound medical, social, and economic consequences of DUI that ripple through communities, families, and individuals.

The Medical Reality of DUI
Alcohol’s impact on the body is both immediate and far-reaching. Even in small quantities, it impairs essential cognitive and physical functions, creating a dangerous disconnect between driver and vehicle:

Slowed Reflexes: Alcohol delays reaction times, making it difficult to respond to sudden changes on the road.
Impaired Vision: Blurred or double vision reduces a driver’s ability to judge distances and recognize hazards.
Poor Decision-Making: Alcohol disrupts the brain’s ability to process information, leading to risky behaviors and poor judgment.
A blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of just 0.05%—the legal limit in New Zealand—doubles the risk of a crash. At higher levels, the likelihood of a fatal accident increases exponentially. Chronic alcohol misuse, often associated with repeated DUI incidents, can lead to long-term health issues such as liver damage, cardiovascular disease, and mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.

A Community Issue, Not Just an Individual One
DUI is not merely a personal failing; it is a societal problem. Every incident affects families, first responders, healthcare systems, and the broader community. In cities like Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin, where nightlife and social drinking are woven into the culture, the challenge is particularly acute. Public health initiatives have made strides in raising awareness, but more is needed. Prevention requires not just education, but accessible solutions that align with modern lifestyles.

Practical Steps for Safer Choices
While systemic solutions are essential, individual actions remain critical. Some practical tips include:

Plan Ahead: Arrange a designated driver, use a rideshare app, or rely on delivery services to avoid the need to drive after drinking.
Monitor Consumption: Use standard drink guidelines to stay within safe limits.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking water between alcoholic beverages can slow the absorption of alcohol.
Set Limits: Establish clear boundaries before drinking to avoid impulsive decisions.
By adopting these habits, individuals can play an active role in reducing DUI incidents and creating safer communities.

A Smarter Way Forward
The fight against DUI requires a multifaceted approach—one that combines education, enforcement, and innovation. While the road ahead is long, the emergence of practical solutions offers a glimpse of what’s possible. Technologies and businesses that encourage safer choices are beginning to make a difference.

Take GIMME, New Zealand’s local and leading on-demand alcohol delivery platform. The service provides fast, convenient delivery of beverages directly to customers’ doors—within 30–90 minutes in major cities and by the next business day nationwide. By eliminating the need for individuals to drive after consuming alcohol, GIMME reduces the temptation to get behind the wheel and helps prevent DUI. Its commitment to safety and customer satisfaction extends to robust packaging protocols, ensuring a seamless, secure delivery experience.

“We’re not just delivering alcohol; we’re delivering experiences and promoting safer choices,” says Vanshraj Singh, Business Head at GIMME. “Our goal is to make it easy for Kiwis to enjoy their favorite beverages without compromising safety.”

GIMME is more than just a delivery service; it’s a movement toward safer, smarter, and more responsible drinking experiences. By providing an alternative to driving under the influence, GIMME helps to foster a culture of responsibility and conviviality.

Partnering for Progress
GIMME’s partnerships with local breweries, wineries, and distilleries support New Zealand’s vibrant beverage industry while amplifying the company’s public health mission. This community-focused approach strengthens both the local economy and the safety of New Zealand’s roads.

Looking to the future, GIMME is focused on innovation, expanding its reach, and enhancing its technology. With its loyalty and rewards program—on par with those used by global companies like Ben & Jerry’s—GIMME continues to elevate the standard for on-demand alcohol delivery.

Conclusion
As New Zealand continues to grapple with the challenges of DUI, progress depends on collective action. From individuals taking responsible steps to businesses like GIMME leading by example, there is potential to reduce the devastating impact of DUI. Together, these efforts can pave the way for a safer, more conscientious drinking culture—one that values both personal enjoyment and public well-being.

Leading South Island chartered accountancy firm Ashton Wheelans has opened a new office in Rangiora.

The firm has moved its operation from Kaiapoi to 190 High Street, Rangiora, to better service the accounting and business consultancy requirements of the growing Rangiora business community. It is the fourth South Island location for Ashton Wheelans, which also has offices in Christchurch, Greymouth and Wānaka.

Ashton Wheelans partner Andrew Keys – who is based in the new Rangiora office – says the strategic move enables local businesses to receive top-level business advisory and accounting services without travelling to Christchurch.

“Rangiora is a really exciting location for our new office – the town is growing at a phenomenal rate and business is thriving,” he says. “There is no longer the need for local business owners to travel into the Christchurch CBD for professional services. However, we still felt there was a gap in the market for a larger accounting firm to support Rangiora locals with premium, full-service advice and expertise. We’re looking forward to filling that gap in specialist accountancy services, but without the premium pricing.”

Ashton Wheelans had been running a successful office in Kaiapoi for more than 50 years, however the exceptional economic growth of Rangiora in recent years was a contributing factor to the relocation. A large team will be based in the new future-focused office – Keys, along with a range of accounting specialists from graduates through to senior advisors, an auditor and a client finance manager.

Keys says the company specialises in a broad scope of detailed accounting services and business growth expertise, including essential services such as accounting, tax and auditing, and advice on acquisitions, startups, mentoring, restructuring or insolvency, succession and strategic planning.

“We tailor solutions to the needs of every business, and do it in a way that is personal and adds value to our clients,” says Keys. “We are accountants first and foremost, but we strive to help all our clients reach their goals and achieve success, whatever that means to them. We’re looking forward to becoming a trusted part of the Rangiora business community.”

More than 3 million* New Zealanders currently have a KiwiSaver account, and making small tweaks has the potential to make a big difference to Kiwis’ finances. We’ve picked our top 4 KiwiSaver hacks to help Kiwis maximise their savings in 2025 and beyond.

1. The right fund can kick KiwiSaver savings into top gear – check you’re not in a ‘default’ fund

Almost half of all new members* start KiwiSaver in a default fund. But these funds are intended to be a ‘parking space’ until they decide which fund suits best.
An aggressive or growth fund offers better potential for long-term returns compared to a default fund (which is a balanced fund). There would be ups and downs along the way, and it will also depend on your investment timeframe.
“We always recommend talking to a KiwiSaver adviser to help you work out which fund type is best for you,” says Kristian James, Head of Distribution for Generate. “A quick chat can make a huge difference to your long-term returns.”

2. Recognise the difference small amounts can make to a KiwiSaver account balance.

Many Kiwis may think a percentage point or a few dollars here and there don’t matter. But because KiwiSaver is primarily a long-term investment, even small amounts make a big difference thanks to the power of compounding returns.
Generate KiwiSaver Scheme encourages members to explore the impact of their contributions using its online KiwiSaver calculator. By adjusting contribution rates by 1%, 2%, or more, members can see how small changes today could significantly enhance their KiwiSaver account balance at retirement.

3. Don’t miss out on $521 of annual government contribution.

Every year, KiwiSaver members aged between 18 and 65 can get an extra $521.43 from the government. To be eligible, you need to contribute at least $1,042.86 to your KiwiSaver account between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025.
Even if they have temporarily stopped contributing regularly to their KiwiSaver account, it’s crucial Kiwis make a one-off payment of $1,042.86 so they don’t miss out on the government contribution. This extra money can really add up by retirement.

4. When it comes to your KiwiSaver account, expert advice is invaluable.

Financial advice can pay big dividends in the long term – advised Kiwis have approximately 52% more in their KiwiSaver account than those who haven’t had advice.**
“Our Generate KiwiSaver Scheme advisers can help ensure members are investing in the right fund, getting all the benefits they’re entitled to and are on track for the best possible financial future. All it takes is a quick no-obligation chat,” says Kristian James, Head of Distribution for Generate.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

As the holiday season unfolds, the liquidation of SolarZero looms over New Zealand’s solar energy landscape. Equity Solar Brokers, a leading solar broker, is raising the alarm on the implications of this development in our advancing solar industry. We believe this is a wake-up call for consumers and policy makers alike, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable, long term plan to help develop New Zealand’s residential solar sector.

SolarZero’s Sudden Withdraw

In a move reminiscent of the Grinch who stole Christmas, Blackrock, one of the world’s largest asset managers, pulled the plug on SolarZero just as the festive season approached. Despite acquiring the company for a reported $100+ million in 2022, Blackrock’s decision left over 160 employees jobless and contractors unpaid, casting a shadow over the holiday spirit.

Blackrock’s investment in SolarZero, while significant for the company, was a relatively minor component of their extensive portfolio, likely accounting for less than 0.001% of their total assets under management. So, why did they invest into solar in the first place? They saw an opportunity, but one of our insider sources at SolarZero suggests Blackrock didn’t understand the B2C business model and the need to hit scale.

“BlackRock had invested as Australiasia is predicted to have the biggest need for power infrustructure going forward – EVs, smart homes etc. NZ doesn’t have the money to fund these upgrades. BlackRock invested for the long term, our contracts don’t break even til around year 10. We were never cashflow break even, and were only forecasted to from June. They had never invested in a B2C business before. Honestly, I don’t think they spent enough time in the business to understand the intricacies, nor the complexities. Their messaging was always that they were supportive so to end in such a way was truly shocking” – SolarZero on Blackrocks withdraw.

New Zealand vs. Australia: A Comparative Look at Solar Uptake

Equity Solar Brokers analysis indicates that New Zealand’s solar market possesses immense potential but lags behind its neighbor, Australia. Currently, solar power is installed by a mere 2.5% of New Zealand’s households, with over 600 installations being completed each month. In contrast, Australia boasts a solar penetration rate exceeding 30%.

Kiwi’s often comment that Australia’s uptake was primarily due to government subsidies. This statement carries merit, but misses the point.

Australia installed solar at an immense pace for one reason only. That reason – it made sense. Aussie’s saw the ‘no-brainer’ case for solar, where solar systems saved enough energy annually to pay for the upfront cost in as little as 3 years. The question is; is NZ on the same path, where solar energy enters the ‘no-brainer’ category?

For New Zealand to truly embrace a sustainable energy future, a multi-faceted approach is essential:

Government-Led support: The NZ Government should be rallying behind already existing initiatives, such as those proposed by rewiring Aotearoa to level the playing field for consumers installing solar on their home or business. Furthermore, policy frameworks should be tailored to New Zealand’s specific environmental and regulatory landscape, make it affordable and affordable for Solar Rooftop installs.

Scaling insights: “No-brainer” funding methods exist. Like usual, NZ isn’t lacking in great ideas! Awareness is our challenge, as we haven’t yet reached the tipping point.

The opportunity: Over the next 25 years, most households will incur over $100,000 in energy costs. We must be empowering kiwis to take ownership of their energy costs.
It’s all well and good to remember to turn off light switches and dial down the temperature on hot water cylinders, but there’s a lot more that can be said for empowering each individual and their wider community on how solar can save them money, keep them connected in a power outage, and accelerate NZ on it’s race to 100% renewable.

Long-Term Investment Strategies: Investors with a genuine commitment to sustainability can create lasting change. With rooftop solar dropping in price, energy costs on the rise, and fixed yields on the way down, now is the time for investors to allocate time and energy to exploring the positive returns of solar.

Equity Solar Brokers calls on Energy Minister Simeon Brown to lead the charge in developing a comprehensive plan for solar energy in New Zealand, specifically with a focus on rooftop solar, as distributed generation decreases our need for longer term grid infrastructure investment.

Further to policy and support, we suggest a two-fold increase to solar-export restrictions, which will enable larger residential rooftop solar installations.

If subsidies are considered, we suggest a subsidy only for solar batteries, which is a double edged sword approach to increasing both energy generation and storage.

We challenge the Minister to craft a strategy that prioritizes local investment and innovation over reliance on overseas funds with conflicted motives. By fostering a homegrown solar industry, New Zealand can secure its energy future, ensuring that the benefits of solar adoption are felt by all Kiwis.
