Police are investigating a report of vandalism on the rainbow pedestrian crossing on Karangahape Road on Friday morning and are appealing to the public for information to assist.

Auckland City Central Area Commander, Inspector Grant Tetzlaff, says the report of wilful damage was reported to Police around 3.20am.

“A group of three people have poured paint on the rainbow crossing before leaving the area in a vehicle. 

“The vehicle had the registration plates removed and the persons had their faces concealed.”

Police have attended and are currently reviewing available CCTV footage in the area to determine the identity of those responsible and to hold them to account.

“We have no tolerance for reports of this nature, and when it appears to directly target a particular sector of our diverse community,” Inspector Tetzlaff says.

Police are also releasing images of the vehicle and people believed to be involved to assist us with our enquiries

“The vehicle is a distinctive, high gloss grey or white colour, with black roof racks and mag wheels.”
