A 16-year-old is due in Youth Court tomorrow after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in central Palmerston North this morning.

The female pedestrian was hit at the intersection of Church and Princess Street around 7:45am, and carried a short distance before impacting with the road.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and render assistance, and left the scene. He was arrested by Police a short time later and faces a charge of failing to stop and ascertain injury after a crash.

The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance and is undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police would like to thank the members of the public who rendered assistance to the victim, and to the commuters who were disrupted by the scene examination.
