Update: Missing Christchurch woman found deceased

A 66-year-old woman missing in Christchurch has sadly been located deceased this evening.

The woman was found by Police Search and Rescue at around 6pm today.

Police would like to thank all those who assisted with the search, including Coastguard Sumner volunteers, Land Search and Rescue volunteers, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff.

We would also like to acknowledge everyone who contacted Police with possible sightings following our public appeals for information.

The woman’s death is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the Coroner.

Program Overview

The Challenge invites youth-led teams to submit original project ideas in one of four key areas:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Nature-Based Solutions
  • Circular Economy
  • Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Cambodian citizens aged 18 to 30
  • Team: Form a group of 3 to 5 members
  • Theme Selection: Each team must select one out of 4 thematic areas for their proposal
  • Originality: Submissions must be original, not previously awarded or plagiarized
  • Independence: Teams must not formally represent existing organizations (e.g., NGOs, companies)
  • Participation: Commitment to all program stages, including workshops, mentorship, the semi-final and the final pitch
  • Implementation: Winning teams must carry out their proposed projects

From September 2025 through January 2026, selected teams will undergo an intensive training and mentorship program supported by CE SAIN, UN-Habitat, Ruy Reach, and other environmental experts. The program will culminate in a final pitch competition, where top teams will receive seed funding of up to USD 30,000 to bring their solutions to life.

A total of 20 teams will be shortlisted. One additional team will receive the “Most Popular Project” award, based on online public voting.

Police seek public’s help to find Simran

Police are appealing to the public for any possible sightings of Simran.

Simran, 41, was reported missing from her home on Tuesday night and Police have serious concerns for her welfare.

Simran was last seen in Whakatāne, but Police located her vehicle in Pongakawa and believe she still may be in that area.

Simran is possibly with her dog, which is a white Shih Tzu.

If you have seen Simran, or have any information where she might be, please call 105 and quote case number 250916/8709.

ASMS union walks away from patients

Today’s decision by the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) union to walk away from bargaining and continue with strike action next week will leave more than 13,000 patients without the care they need.

This is despite Health New Zealand tabling an updated offer during negotiations this week that would have cost the taxpayers more than $160 million over a 16-month term for around 5,500 senior doctors.

Based on the impacts of the last ASMS union strike, Health New Zealand estimates the upcoming 48-hour strike will postpone care for more than 13,000 patients, adding further pressure to those already waiting too long:

  • 1800 elective procedures such as hips, knees, and cataracts.
  • 3600 first specialist assessments.
  • 7000 follow-up appointments.
  • 800 out-patient procedures.

“The decision to strike follows the union’s recent refusal to enter binding arbitration to resolve its ongoing dispute with Health New Zealand, despite more than a year of negotiations.

“The ASMS union is putting politics ahead of patients, while Health New Zealand continues to engage in good faith.

“Senior doctors are among the most well-remunerated public servants, with many also working in private practice. At Health New Zealand, their average total remuneration, including overtime and allowances, is $343,500. They also receive generous conditions including:

  • Six weeks’ annual leave.
  • Two weeks’ paid leave each year for training and conferences.
  • A fully paid three-month sabbatical every six years.
  • Reimbursement for licences, college memberships, and insurance.
