Giftbox Boutique Kicks off Blue Ribbon Appeal

Giftbox Boutique has launched its blue ribbon appeal, an initiative which will raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation NZ.

The online retailer sells gift baskets and hampers and will be giving their customers the option of adding a decorative blue ribbon to their order for an extra one dollar. Giftbox Boutique will then match this donation, meaning two dollars donated to Prostate Cancer Foundation NZ for each gift basket purchased with a blue ribbon.

Occasions like Father’s Day are traditionally Giftbox Boutique’s busiest. So, the company run their charity drives around these occasions. Recently the company ran a pink ribbon appeal for Mother’s Day, an initiative which saw over $2700 raised for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

“Our customers have been very receptive to our previous coloured ribbon campaigns”, explains Giftbox Boutique Director, Katie Gray. “We expect this Father’s Day to be our busiest to date so we are extra excited to see how much we can raise for the Blue September Campaign”.

Blue September is an annual campaign by the Prostate Cancer Foundation NZ to increase awareness, encourage men to get checked and fundraise to eliminate death and suffering from prostate cancer.

Each year, New Zealand loses roughly 600 men to prostate cancer. Many of these deaths are preventable if we detect the disease early. Too many men suffer in silence and only get checked when it is too late.

“Blue September is such an important campaign”, says Gray. “It encourages open conversations around prostate cancer and gets the word out about the dangers of the disease. The foundation relies solely on donations, so we are encouraging all our customers to get on board with our blue ribbon drive”.

24 NZ Community Law Centres Take On Actionstep

Actionstep today announces their appointment as practice management software provider for the entire Community Law Centres O Aotearoa (CLCA) network.

CLCA has 24 sites across New Zealand with 170 staff and over 1,200 volunteer lawyers servicing 50,000 CLC clients every year on the Actionstep’s software platform. These CLCs provide free legal assistance across a wide range of legal areas, including Criminal, Youth Law, Health and Disability, Individual Rights and Freedom, and Immigration, to name a few.

Calling for ‘voice of students’ on the future of education through student writing

The five best pieces submitted to the competition will be published on TBS Next Gen, which will give the student authors the chance to have their voices heard by a readership of over 50,000 people.

The author of the winning article will also be offered a monthly feature over a six-month period on TBS Next Gen, with mentorship from TBS staff writers.

TBS Next Gen is a portal on The Big Smoke where student voices are heard, offering a platform to write non-fiction articles and voice their opinions on matters which are shaping the nation.

E-scooter Pickup Service to Support Mechanics

With the plunge back into Alert Level 3 in Auckland, mechanics have quickly felt the impact of customers not wanting to leave their house. Despite workshops having implemented contactless measures and having the green light to operate from the government, customers aren’t walking in the door anymore. You can see this in the most recent WoF report, inspections are falling back to near level 4 volumes, which are an indicator of general repair work.

“Over 120 local mechanics are working with ​My Auto Shop​ around the country who are feeling this impact, and we want to do what we can to help. Fortunately, we have a couple of ways to help in this period of pain.” said founder Andy Bowie.
With customer’s clearly unwilling to leave the house, My Auto Shop has made their E-Scooter powered pick up and drop off solution free nationwide. This means customers can have a driver partner, armed with their own fleet of folding E-Scooters come and pick up a car and get it sorted at a time when it’s not needed, without needing to leave the house. Drivers have contactless methods in place, such as using disposable seat covers, gloves and sanitizing spray, as well as masks. “Having completed over a hundred pick up and drop offs in the last couple of months, we think now is a great time to offer the service to customers, and hopefully enable more traffic into local workshops around the country”

Online payments are also a necessary requirement to ensure contactless service and many mechanics don’t have the infrastructure to collect these. In fact 17% of workshops don’t even have a website. My Auto Shop has made their service commission free during this time of hardship, to allow garages to utilize the online payment portal. “We hope this enables mechanics to collect full payment for jobs, without needing to have customers step foot in a workshop”

The Fight Against Malaria: Building Sustainable Solutions in South Sudan

Majok Tulba, an award-winning author and social entrepreneur, is running a Facebook fundraiser campaign in New Zealand and Australia to raise funds for malaria medication for his village in South Sudan. He aims to establish sustainable solutions that financially empower poor communities and make quality healthcare accessible to all.

With up to 200 youngsters a day dying and 2000 newborn deaths each year from the disease, the appeal has taken on a personal journey for Majok, who “has shared a bed with mosquitoes and malaria.”

In recent days, a World Health Organisation report revealed a mortality surveillance in Bentiu camp in South Sudan showed a higher death rate in 2020 compared to 2019. In another camp malaria cases had risen by 125 percent since late June.

The report attributes cases of malaria to the flooding in the country occasioned by heavy rains. A WHO official in the country, Dr Joseph Wamala, said the report revealed malaria had exceeded acute respiratory infections as the leading cause of morbidity in the area.

Malaria is one of the top causes of illness and death in South Sudan with most cases and deaths occurring in children and expectant mothers. The WHO estimates at least 1.3 million people fell ill with malaria in 2017.

Recounting when he was infected, Majok said: “In the night, I woke to what felt like lightning coursing through my head, my legs, and spreading to my entire body. I felt the chill, the fever, and the aches. I could barely move. I thought I wasn’t going to see another sunrise.”

Having survived, he is now throwing his weight behind the Konybai (“help the people” in Dinka language) malaria medication project. Created to offer quality healthcare to families in South Sudan, appeal organisers want to build community pharmacies and health programs, as well as funding mosquito nets and anti-malarial medications.

A single $5 donation can give someone the anti-inflammatory medication they need. For $10, you can give two children antibiotics. For $100, you can give two children and their mothers a month’s worth of lifesaving medications. 

Majok added: “Malaria kills so many people and leaves so many more too sick to function. It holds back the world’spoorest from making the most of their lives.”

“With your support, hundreds of sick people will receive what they require to get better and help Konybai deliver on a promise that better days and brighter horizons are ahead.”

Parkin Drawing Prize Finalist Over 300 Hours Work

This is because every inch of the 65x55cm (larger than A2) card is filled with minute yet realistic detailing; the whole drawing is done with very fine Copic Multiliners (0.03mm), with the exception of some colored pencil and pen added to create more depth. Natalie’s precise but lively style, has extremely fine impressionistic details and dashes of colour that allude to a sense of realism.

All of Natalie’s work is extremely intricate and detailed “Some of the work I do takes months or years to finish depending on how intricate and big the piece is. Even the smaller works can take weeks or months – time and patience really is a virtue”.

“Deciding to enter the Parkin Drawing Prize and being accepted is such an honour and big deal for me, I work on my artwork tirelessly, so being accepted is recognition of all the hard work I put into this piece. The last few months before the deadline were particularly full on!”

Natalie is 31, has no formal artistic training, and yet up until about about 5 years ago she mainly painted realistic and colourful oil portraits. Making the decision while living in Melbourne in 2015, she gave up pursuing a career in the comedy world to completely restart her already self-taught art practice, and go back to square one to relearn how to draw and illustrate.

From cartoons, to black and white line-art drawings of nature scenes, men with beards and dogs in the wind, or a one metre long panoramic drawing of the Wellington Botanic Gardens, her work became increasingly detailed until she was able to produce the detail she does today.

About the Fountain of Life and Death:
The Fountain is an intimate portrait of life and death inspired by experiences, good and bad, all of which have ultimately strengthened my foundations as a person.
All the faces and people hidden in the fountain’s structure represent various ideas… the objects that the lady in the center is holding are structures of the universe, and challenges that we all have to face. The flowers and water flowing from her hair represent life; and the chaotic, broken and interwoven fountain represents death. The lady in the middle represents the inner strength that everyone has access to.
