NZ Vets behind major new discovery in the treatment of arthritis

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

In a twist on new uses of old things, Arthramid® Vet is a unique and patented 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG) for intra-articular injection, and the first PAAG in the world registered for veterinary use. This revolutionary hydrogel contains no active pharmaceutical ingredient and is highly effective, safe and long-lasting. It has been used previously as a dermal filler in cosmetic surgery but early indications are this new application could one day even prevent joint damage.

Arthramid® Vet is injected into the joint of animals where it integrates into the joint capsule of the diseased joint to provide a biocompatible tissue scaffold into which the body’s own tissues grow. This increases the elasticity, strength and stability of the joint resulting in reduced pain and lameness and improved joint function. The first negative effects of arthritis seen in a diseased joint.

The final parts of the research conducted in NZ and Australia were led by two NZ veterinarians and included collaboration with Otago University and local labs to understand the mechanism of action and safety of the product. The product, produced under license in Denmark, is now registered for use in horses in Australia and NZ and signals a move away from anti inflammatories for managing this debilitating disease.

Furthermore, with the welfare of animals, and particularly race horses, becoming a major focus for industry groups the potential to reduce the use of corticosteroids is another significant benefit.

Only NZ-made outdoor heater proves popular as support for locally made products flourishes

0

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

Auckland outdoor heater manufacturer, Kelray Heating has seen an increased interest in their product as more kiwis look for locally made products.

Kelray produces outdoor heaters for home and business use and has been active in the outdoor infrared heating market since the 1990s. The Auckland-based company was originally founded to offer a higher quality product to kiwi businesses after they noticed imported models were prone to deterioration due to New Zealand’s unique conditions.

“Our air is heavily salt laden”, explains Kelray Heater founder, Kelvin Davis, “Most heaters built overseas will deteriorate quite quickly as most were not made for such harsh exposure”.

This led Davis and his business partner to construct a heater using marine grade stainless steel – including all fitting, nuts, bolts, and components. While the heaters have been highly praised and sought after in hospitality circles, the rise of cheap, overseas imported models meant Kelray were operating in a crowded market.

But with the global pandemic triggering a perspective shift among Kiwi consumers, the company has noticed the demand for quality, NZ made products increase since lockdown was lifted.

“It’s really wonderful to see kiwis support the products that we make here”, says Davis. “NZ is made up of so many small businesses and showing your support by buying local will really make a difference”.

Davis hopes that this push for NZ made products will continue as people experience the quality and workmanship that goes into a lot of the goods we produce locally.

“The great thing about buying local is that you can often jump on the phone and talk directly to the manufacturer”, says Davis. “We really enjoy helping guide people on the best heating solution for their space and often spend a lot of time getting to know our customers”.

Kelray’s outdoor heating range are available through purchase via their website upon enquiry.

New Educational Tools for Beekeepers

0

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

Ecrotek, New Zealand’s largest beekeeping supply company, has developed new education tools for beekeepers. With hive numbers growing from 300,000 to over 1 million, the beekeeping industry has seen significant expansion over the past 10 years.

Many beekeepers now have less than 5 years’ experience. Although not a given, lower experience levels can be detrimental to the industry, resulting in higher rates of disease and starvation, lower honey yields and decreased operational efficiency.

In order to address this issue, Ecrotek, in partnership with Dr Mark Goodwin, a world-leading beekeeping scientist and Sarah Cross a Plant and Food Research Associate have produced a new book, Best Practice Beekeeping, that covers the ‘should’ and ‘should nots’ of beekeeping in a simple easy to read format.

Together with the assistance Andrew Stratford, an experienced commercial beekeeper, Mark and Sarah have produced an online series containing over 100 beekeeping videos on all aspects of beekeeping.

It is expected that these resources will assist the industry through better disease management, increased honey production and improved operational efficiency. The Best Practice Beekeeping Book and Online Videos have just launched and are available to view online at www.bestpracticebeekeeping.co.nz

New Zealand Start-up Keuzi, Takes the World’s Most Comfortable Boots to the World

0

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

Silky, cozy and great looking – three perfect ways to describe the feeling of slipping on a pair of boots from Kiwi start-up, Keuzi. The basis for this hand-crafted leather product is a light, natural, fibre that outperforms merino wool in every way. From idea to product over several months, founder and CEO, Neil Taylor, has engaged world class kiwi design and footwear talent, and partnered with co-founder Nicholas Couch to create the Keuzi boots and launch a whole new footwear experience to the world.

The boots have been specifically designed to utilize the unique properties of this innovative fibre – which regulates temperature, wicks away moisture, and reduces odor – to create a footwear experience so comfortable they’ll be the first thing you put on in the morning, and the last thing you take off at night! To make the most of this, sock less wear is recommended.

With the COVID-19 pandemic presenting obstacles for following a more traditional route of developing the product offshore, the Keuzi team have completed the first design and development at home in New Zealand. The project has utilized the creative talents of some of New Zealand’s leading footwear designers and technicians to create a high quality, beautiful, comfortable boot that sits at the intersection of fashion and utility.

As for the challenge of launching in the downturn of a global pandemic, the signs are all there that high quality, well designed products remain in demand. “This has been a steep learning curve, but we’re up for the challenge” says entrepreneur Neil Taylor. No stranger to the challenge of building a new business, Neil cut his teeth in the peak of the late 90’s dot-com boom, launching one of New Zealand’s first business-to-consumer e-commerce websites. Neil continues, “having spent 25 years in the IT industry, footwear making is outside of my comfort zone, so finding the right people has been very important”. Along with some of New Zealand’s most experienced footwear designers and technicians, Industrial Designer Nick Couch has joined which has been a big help in making this idea a reality. Nick brings experience leading the design and delivery of best in class innovation projects internationally, and a background in footwear design has provided guidance for the project’s foundations.

It has been Neil and Nick’s passion for the outdoors and New Zealand’s world-renowned natural ecosystems that have been the catalyst for Keuzi and our conservation focus. Despite conservation efforts in New Zealand, introduced pests are wreaking havoc on New Zealand’s native flora, birds and fauna where they cause devastating damage to broadleaved trees, notably rata, and destroy the eggs of native birds.

With a conservation focus, Keuzi is joining arms with one of New Zealand’s largest conservation organisations – to be announced soon – where a percentage of proceeds from product sales will be donated to help regenerate New Zealand’s native species by humanely reducing the rampant pest population, and boosting regional employment opportunities.

Now, after months of hard work creating boots that are as suitable an addition to a fashionable outfit, as they are with a bed robe; boots with the comfort of your favorite pair of sneakers, and the softness of a pillow, it’s time to take Keuzi’s boots to the world!

Harcourts Ilse Evans No ‘Doom & Gloom’ Predictors

0

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

(PR.co.nz)

As Ilse Evans puts it, “It all feels a little back to normal in the real estate world, or just about. Open home numbers are confident and buyers are still looking and making buying decisions. There are always those one or two buyers that can’t wait to tell us that the market is about to come crashing down and we should all hide for cover (unless our owners will happily take a massive drop and then they are in)”.

Ilse says that stats from the month of Level 3 show a significant drop in the volume of sales, but with part of this accounting for Level 4 transactions, or lack of, and with people initially in Level 3 hesitant to get buying immediately, it is not a surprise at all.

Yes, prices are a little softer, but once again to be expected, with a reduction in confidence from purchasers, with the concerns of economic effects, job layoffs etc. With these, and the real unknown for many of what the future brings, you can’t blame anyone for taking the ‘wait and see’ attitude.

Harcourts Cooper expect to see the market stats to show more softening as they play catch up to today’s market, but they don’t feel they will be in the double digits at all.

With maybe 5% so far, and maybe another around 5% as we set into the new norm, all that has happened is that prices have gone back to the end of 2019 levels. For many owners looking to buy and sell in the same market, or owners who have enjoyed the comfortable 10% increase seen over the last 12 months, even after this softening, they still can’t think of a safer investment than residential property.

As Ilse says, “As you can tell I am not a subscriber to the doom and gloom predictors, the general economists from overseas who don’t know the intricacies of how our New Zealand economy and property market interacts with the many facets that affect its value.

“However, I do put a lot of confidence in a well-seasoned local economist, Tony Alexander, likely the most well-known and respected one of our time, who provides many reasons why, although we will see job losses and a tougher economy for a period, we will only see moderate softening of houses prices and not an absolute bath as many buyers hope and wish for”, so for more information on Takapuna real estate, property appraisals Takapuna and selling my house please go to http://www.ilseevans.co.nz .

No Blood Phosphates

0

Source: Press Release Service

(PR.co.nz) Western Sahara Campaign-NZ regretfully announces that once again New Zealand fertiliser companies Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients are continuing to play a part in the pillage of Western Sahara. A Hong Kong registered bulk carrier, the Trans Spring is due to arrive on 17th of June 2020 at Napier Port and then continue to Lyttleton to deliver a cargo of over 56,000 tonnes of phosphates illegally plundered from Western Sahara to Ravensdown. This comes shortly after the bulk carrier Van Star arrived at Tauranga and Bluff on behalf of Ballance Agri-Nutrients in May this year carrying a cargo of Western Sahara phosphates.

In the last financial year the Moroccan regime treasury received around US$30 million from the two New Zealand companies in return for Western Sahara rock however the people of Western Sahara particularly those in refugee camps and liberated areas did not benefit and have not consented to the illegal trade in their natural resources. The rock is extracted by the Moroccan business OCP for Moroccan profit with no return offered to the people of Western Sahara, the Saharawis.

Thousands of displaced Sahrawi live in camps near Tindouf in Algeria in harsh conditions where they have been since the Moroccan invasion in 1975. Currently the camps are experiencing food and medical shortages due to Covid-19 pandemic. The value of the current shipment on board the Trans Spring (US$ 4 million) could supply food to the camps for a year.
In good and bad times for the Saharawis both Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients continue to achieve their goals on the back of this hungry and displaced people. Once again New Zealand companies’ financial interests seem to have out-weighed legal obligations, ethics and human rights.

Mike Barton from the Western Sahara Campaign-NZ said “we urge the Government to step in and compel Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients to halt their illegal imports of Western Sahara phosphates immediately” and added “We also call on Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients to examine their respective positions and walk away from assisting the in the pillage of Western Sahara. Right now, there is but a ceasefire in place and these imports are providing financial rewards to the aggressor, Morocco, in its bid to annex Western Sahara and subjugate the Sahrawi.”

Mr Barton underlined that “The lack of action by the New Zealand Government and the intransigence of Ravensdown and Ballance Agri-Nutrients are damaging our country’s reputation and standing in the world. We call on all New Zealanders to press their local representatives to end this shame and end this dark page of our modern history. It is time for New Zealanders to say NO to the trade in blood phosphates.”
