New Technology Reduces Waste and Costs in Building Maintenance
As buildings age, their exterior surfaces often deteriorate, leading to significant maintenance challenges. Traditionally, replacing ACM panels has been the go-to solution, requiring substantial financial investment and generating large amounts of waste. WRNZ is changing the landscape by offering an alternative that restores panels to a like-new condition without the need for removal.

“Our goal is to provide a more sustainable solution for property owners and developers,” says Ben Ravenhall, General Manager of WRNZ. “With our advanced spray technology, we’re extending the life of ACM panels while significantly reducing waste and costs associated with replacements.”
The cost-effectiveness of this technology has made it particularly attractive to commercial property managers, who are always looking for ways to extend the life of their building exteriors while adhering to budget constraints. The technology ensures that businesses do not have to sacrifice aesthetics for affordability, making it an ideal solution for retail spaces, office buildings, and multi-residential developments.

How WRNZ’s ACM Panel Restoration Works
The process involves applying a professional-grade coating designed specifically for ACM surfaces. Unlike traditional repainting methods, this technique ensures an even, long-lasting finish that withstands New Zealand’s demanding climate conditions. The result is a restored exterior that maintains its durability and appearance for years to come.

WRNZ’s coating technology has been tested for UV resistance, waterproofing, and anti-corrosive properties, ensuring that refurbished panels meet the highest industry standards. The process is also designed to be efficient, allowing businesses and property owners to complete upgrades without major disruption. It also eliminates the environmental impact of disposing of large quantities of ACM panels, reducing landfill waste and promoting a circular economy.

Making an Impact Across New Zealand
WRNZ’s ACM panel restoration service has already been implemented across a variety of commercial and residential projects. A recent refurbishment of an Auckland office complex demonstrated the effectiveness of the technology, as panels that had faded over time were restored to their original vibrancy. The project was completed in a fraction of the time and cost compared to full panel replacement, showcasing the potential of this innovative approach.
In addition to office buildings, the company has worked on shopping centres, apartment buildings, and educational institutions. With the increasing focus on sustainable building practices, WRNZ’s technology is attracting attention from architects and developers looking for greener alternatives to traditional renovation methods.

This technology is also gaining traction among architects and developers looking for environmentally responsible refurbishment options. With the global focus on reducing construction waste, WRNZ’s approach aligns with broader sustainability goals, making it an appealing choice for modern building maintenance.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
WRNZ has built a reputation for excellence in architectural coatings and refurbishment solutions, consistently pushing boundaries in sustainable building maintenance. Their team of specialists applies cutting-edge techniques to ensure high-quality results while prioritising environmental responsibility.
The company’s approach to innovation extends beyond ACM panels. WRNZ is exploring additional applications for its advanced spray coating technology, including the restoration of other architectural materials such as steel cladding and concrete façades. By investing in research and development, WRNZ is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable building refurbishment solutions.

“We believe that the future of building maintenance is in sustainable solutions,” says Ben Ravenhall – General Manager of WRNZ. “Our ACM panel restoration technology is just one example of how innovation can reduce environmental impact while maintaining the integrity of our built environment.”

Looking Ahead
As demand for sustainable refurbishment solutions continues to rise, WRNZ remains committed to expanding its services and refining its technology. Property owners, architects, and facility managers interested in learning more about WRNZ’s ACM panel restoration technology can visit https://wrnz.co.nz/ for more information.

The company also plans to collaborate with industry partners and government organisations to further promote sustainable building practices in New Zealand. With its forward-thinking approach and commitment to quality, WRNZ is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of architectural refurbishment.

About WRNZ
WRNZ is a New Zealand-based specialist in architectural spray coatings, offering innovative solutions for exterior refurbishment and panel restoration. With a focus on sustainability and quality, WRNZ is helping reshape how ACM panels and other architectural surfaces are maintained across commercial and residential sectors.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

As the holiday season unfolds, the liquidation of SolarZero looms over New Zealand’s solar energy landscape. Equity Solar Brokers, a leading solar broker, is raising the alarm on the implications of this development in our advancing solar industry. We believe this is a wake-up call for consumers and policy makers alike, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable, long term plan to help develop New Zealand’s residential solar sector.

SolarZero’s Sudden Withdraw

In a move reminiscent of the Grinch who stole Christmas, Blackrock, one of the world’s largest asset managers, pulled the plug on SolarZero just as the festive season approached. Despite acquiring the company for a reported $100+ million in 2022, Blackrock’s decision left over 160 employees jobless and contractors unpaid, casting a shadow over the holiday spirit.

Blackrock’s investment in SolarZero, while significant for the company, was a relatively minor component of their extensive portfolio, likely accounting for less than 0.001% of their total assets under management. So, why did they invest into solar in the first place? They saw an opportunity, but one of our insider sources at SolarZero suggests Blackrock didn’t understand the B2C business model and the need to hit scale.

“BlackRock had invested as Australiasia is predicted to have the biggest need for power infrustructure going forward – EVs, smart homes etc. NZ doesn’t have the money to fund these upgrades. BlackRock invested for the long term, our contracts don’t break even til around year 10. We were never cashflow break even, and were only forecasted to from June. They had never invested in a B2C business before. Honestly, I don’t think they spent enough time in the business to understand the intricacies, nor the complexities. Their messaging was always that they were supportive so to end in such a way was truly shocking” – SolarZero on Blackrocks withdraw.

New Zealand vs. Australia: A Comparative Look at Solar Uptake

Equity Solar Brokers analysis indicates that New Zealand’s solar market possesses immense potential but lags behind its neighbor, Australia. Currently, solar power is installed by a mere 2.5% of New Zealand’s households, with over 600 installations being completed each month. In contrast, Australia boasts a solar penetration rate exceeding 30%.

Kiwi’s often comment that Australia’s uptake was primarily due to government subsidies. This statement carries merit, but misses the point.

Australia installed solar at an immense pace for one reason only. That reason – it made sense. Aussie’s saw the ‘no-brainer’ case for solar, where solar systems saved enough energy annually to pay for the upfront cost in as little as 3 years. The question is; is NZ on the same path, where solar energy enters the ‘no-brainer’ category?

For New Zealand to truly embrace a sustainable energy future, a multi-faceted approach is essential:

Government-Led support: The NZ Government should be rallying behind already existing initiatives, such as those proposed by rewiring Aotearoa to level the playing field for consumers installing solar on their home or business. Furthermore, policy frameworks should be tailored to New Zealand’s specific environmental and regulatory landscape, make it affordable and affordable for Solar Rooftop installs.

Scaling insights: “No-brainer” funding methods exist. Like usual, NZ isn’t lacking in great ideas! Awareness is our challenge, as we haven’t yet reached the tipping point.

The opportunity: Over the next 25 years, most households will incur over $100,000 in energy costs. We must be empowering kiwis to take ownership of their energy costs.
It’s all well and good to remember to turn off light switches and dial down the temperature on hot water cylinders, but there’s a lot more that can be said for empowering each individual and their wider community on how solar can save them money, keep them connected in a power outage, and accelerate NZ on it’s race to 100% renewable.

Long-Term Investment Strategies: Investors with a genuine commitment to sustainability can create lasting change. With rooftop solar dropping in price, energy costs on the rise, and fixed yields on the way down, now is the time for investors to allocate time and energy to exploring the positive returns of solar.

Equity Solar Brokers calls on Energy Minister Simeon Brown to lead the charge in developing a comprehensive plan for solar energy in New Zealand, specifically with a focus on rooftop solar, as distributed generation decreases our need for longer term grid infrastructure investment.

Further to policy and support, we suggest a two-fold increase to solar-export restrictions, which will enable larger residential rooftop solar installations.

If subsidies are considered, we suggest a subsidy only for solar batteries, which is a double edged sword approach to increasing both energy generation and storage.

We challenge the Minister to craft a strategy that prioritizes local investment and innovation over reliance on overseas funds with conflicted motives. By fostering a homegrown solar industry, New Zealand can secure its energy future, ensuring that the benefits of solar adoption are felt by all Kiwis.

Media Release 27 December 2024.

DEC Construction, a prominent construction firm in Warkworth and surrounding areas, has announced it will expand its operations to Mangawhai. The company cites increasing demand for professional building services in the region as the primary driver for this expansion.

DEC Construction has a history of completing a number of successful projects in the Mangawhai, however, this expansion marks a greater commitment to servicing the region.

With the expansion, the company aims to support the growing infrastructure needs of the Mangawhai community and bring additional employment opportunities to the area.

Darren Ettritch, Director of DEC Construction, stated that the decision to expand into Mangawhai comes after observing the area’s sustained growth and development needs.

Continuous Improvement Systems (CIS), primarily associated with fields like IT and manufacturing, involves a systematic, iterative approach to process enhancement. By formally implementing CIS, SmartWay Builders has brought about transformative change in their operations and service delivery.

“CIS has been a game-changer for us,” says Howard Woolston, Managing Director of SmartWay Builders. “By focusing on constant, incremental improvements, we’ve been able to enhance our efficiency, minimize waste, and deliver high-quality results that surpass customer expectations.”

The application of CIS has enabled SmartWay Builders to elevate the customer experience significantly. The company now leverages CIS to understand the customer journey better, identify potential pain points, and create highly personalized renovation experiences, fostering stronger client relationships and enhancing brand loyalty.

SmartWay Builders’ CIS-driven approach also aids in risk mitigation. The company has developed predictive models to anticipate potential challenges, leading to fewer project delays, potential budget overruns, and an improved project success rate.

“By predicting and proactively addressing potential renovation challenges, we’ve drastically reduced unpleasant surprises for our customers which can be common in house renovation particularly when the original plans are not available,” adds Howard. “This results in smoother projects and happier clients.”

Inspired by the challenge to strengthen the heart of Hamilton’s Rototuna neighbourhood, Chow:Hill’s design, undertaken in partnership with Designwell and AECOM, has woven the rich cultural heritage of the local whenua into the contemporary aesthetic of the building. Chow:Hill was also able to work collaboratively with Hamilton City Council as its client and Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa and Ngaati Wairere from early Concept Design to develop meaningful and considered design narratives.

Phillip Kempster, Chow:Hill Senior Principal and Senior Architectural Technician, said the integrated design reflects the natural environment of Rototuna’s wetlands, but has been combined with modern design practices to create a community asset fit for future use.

“Connection has been a central design principle of this project. We wanted to connect the site’s history with modern day development of the new Rototuna town centre, and we wanted to connect the interior of the building with the exterior landscape, encouraging users of the facility to spend time both indoors and out,” explains Kempster.

Sam Thomas, Chow:Hill Principal and Registered Architect, said the construction material chosen for the library enabled that connection to come to fruition.

“The use of Corten steel in the library’s entranceway was chosen for its compatibility with the building’s natural timber look which evokes a feeling of warmth,” Thomas explains. “The folded acoustic ceiling is also a key design element as it reflects the patterns more commonly found in weaving and the building’s high ceiling has created a large, open, space which maximises natural light.”

The area’s former wetland status also manifests itself in the design of the library’s interior. “Te Kete Aronui is the basket of knowledge, and within the library there are islands of books and wayfinding techniques that mimic wetland walkways. We wanted to preserve the heritage of the site and bring the outdoors in,” Thomas said.

Chow:Hill’s design of the outdoor space, which includes bike and car parks, a playground, skatepark, and village square, also reflects the cultural heritage of the landscape.

After an official launch onto the New Zealand market in 2022, Youngman Richardson is seeing great demand for Vac-Ex T-VAC 2 track and AIR-VAC track excavation models, designed to be safe and specialised alternatives to traditional digging methods for exposing buried utilities.

According to Youngman Richardson sales director Phil Fairfield, their Vac-Ex tracked air vacuum excavators are proving popular with industry professionals needing to locate and safely expose buried utilities, especially on construction sites.

“The Vac-Ex units can excavate narrow and deep holes and trenches up five times faster than the time it takes to dig the same area by hand.”

The T-VAC 2 tracked air vacuum excavator is also proving popular with customers, especially for its compatibility with New Zealand conditions.

“The T-VAC 2 can excavate most wet or dry ground and is ideal for sites where space is limited. We’re also seeing customers preferring this excavator for its off-road capabilities, suitability in residential and commercial environments. Ideal for ground excavation in utility, construction and hire industries: pipelaying, rail works, cable laying, gas, road works, tunnelling, arborculture, military, airports, municipal, building, environmental, hydro-demolition and petro-chemical.

HazardCo, a leading health and safety system used across the construction industry, today announced its partnership with Procore, a digital large-scale construction management software solution.

The strategic partnership brings together two leading systems, as construction companies across Australia and New Zealand are increasingly adopting on-site technology to ease their administrative burden and work more efficiently.

HazardCo make health and safety simple, giving more than 10,000 companies the confidence they are keeping their team and their business safe, while reducing the time they spend on paperwork. The HazardCo system provides guided digital tools as well as incident support and health and safety advice when it is needed. HazardCo is most well known for its simple and effective site induction and scan-in solution.

“We’re pleased to be able to integrate Procore with our unique site induction and scan-in solution, making it faster and easier than ever for Procore customers to know who is on-site, and when,” said Nick Halley, Head of Product at HazardCo. “Members receive a hazard board with a unique QR code for their site fence, and everyone uses the free app to scan into site, induct themselves and accept the safety plan, with H&S docs seamlessly flowing back into Procore.”

“Our goal is to make health and safety simple. This exciting partnership between HazardCo and Procore connects construction management and health and safety together, giving building companies an out-of-the box digital WHS system that seamlessly connects with their existing workflows,” said Iain Dixon, Chief Executive at HazardCo.

He concludes, “we regularly speak to builders that are passionate about building scalable and efficient processes for their business, but health and safety continues to be a very manual and paper-heavy activity for them. There are large gains to be made by digitizing health and safety, with HazardCo members telling us they have halved the time they spend on WHS admin using our simple system. This partnership will make it easier for building companies to streamline their processes and give them the confidence they are on top of their health and safety requirements.”

Acuite, a construction-specific reporting and analytics platform, and HazardCo, a leading health and safety management company announce they are working together to help small and medium sized building companies to get on top of their health and safety.

This strategic partnership will deliver powerful new Dashboards, powered by Acuite to HazardCo members, giving them the tools to track health and safety activity and improve safety outcomes.

With so much to keep track of on-site, Dashboards are a practical way for HazardCo members to understand what health and safety activity is taking place across their business and at each project site. Often the business owner or admin staff are based in an office or moving between multiple sites. They want to be able to see at a glance what health and safety activity is taking place, view trends over time, and discover how to improve.

David Speight, Co-Founder, and CEO of Acuite Construction Intelligence says,
“the Acuite founders are builders and we know it’s not easy. Through combining forces with HazardCo, we feel we can make a real difference by not only making sites safer but also improving the lives of builders through arming them with the knowledge to put them on the front foot of their projects”

Following the integration, HazardCo members can get real-time insights into key health and safety activities happening on their sites through Dashboards. These Dashboards help users to understand the areas that are performing well, and those in need of improvement in a simple and easy-to-understsand way.

Iain Dixon, Chief Executive Officer at HazardCo says “We are excited to be working with Acuite because they are the best in the business for reporting, analytics, and insights. Like HazardCo, they specialise in construction, they come from the industry and keep things simple. We’ve had a great response from our members already with feedback that they are loving the quick snapshot they can get from viewing their Dashboards, and being able to see at a glance what health and safety activity is happening or not happening”.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

Media and the BRANZ New House Owner’s Satisfaction Survey report that construction callbacks go up every year -everything from poor paint finishes to floor scratches and wall damage (things that are obvious to new owners) – and the blame is laid squarely at the door of rising workloads and skills shortages, but the reality is workload and skills shortages aren’t going away.

While BRANZ, media and others label the rise in defects as disturbing, they cannot ignore the realities of a New Zealand building site. Construction crews and trades need to work quickly, which is tricky when there are multiple people on site. Surface damage and so-called quality defects are a natural and largely unavoidable consequence of the building process.

At ShieldIt, we understand that there isn’t a construction company out there that doesn’t want to have the satisfaction of a pristine handover. Nobody wants the cost, time and inconvenience of recalls – not the builders and not the customers.

In fact, a recent report produced by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) and funded by the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ), estimates that around $2.5 billion each year is spent on fixing the costs of detected defects related to new house builds. That’s a lot of lost profit to the construction industry (and that’s just residential).

Temporary surface protection is a growing industry because it offers a viable, low-cost solution to helping eliminate detected defects. Here are five reasons for why you should consider temporary surface protection on your next commercial construction project.

1. Satisfaction and confidence from a job well done
Reduce call-backs for your own team and subbies and enjoy the confidence that comes from handing over a project that is as good as you can make it. This means no delays in your next project, and lower material and labour losses. Customers rarely appreciate the craftsmanship that goes on behind the walls – they just see the obvious scratches, scrapes and dents. Temporary surface protection helps eliminate that problem.

2. A better bottom line
Defects and call-backs cost money and time. Purchasing new materials — the potential wastage from having more than you need — getting subbies and team members back on site (when it’s convenient to the customer) and the energy spent fixing the problem are costly. And it happens on job after job after job. Temporary surface protection stops the bleeding.

“Rework is an opportunity cost for firms. Reducing rework improves the profit margin from the construction of new houses. In effect, frequent rework weakens the resilience of firms. As profit margins are squeezed, the residential construction business is left with little cushioning to cope with rainy days.” – The Economic Cost of Quality Defects, Michael Bealing and Laëtitia Leroy de Morel, NZIER

3. Improved competitiveness
First impressions are lasting impressions. A clean handover generates customer satisfaction which leads to referrals, positive feedback and repeat business.

4. Trades congestion? No problem
Organising the right people to be onsite at the right time for an apartment, retirement village build, or for other large-scale projects is a juggling act. You can make it less of a headache by co-ordinating trades to arrive and work at the same time when you know that your floors, walls, windows and other surfaces are protected from the weather, dirty boots, paint splatters, and other forms of accidental damage or breakages.

5. Better outcomes for business overall
There is a hefty social cost related to wasting time and money on remedial work. The affordability of construction projects is impacted, and projects are delayed when preventable defects or damage occur. Using affordable surface protection means we can contribute towards a more streamlined and cost-effective industry – and better skills utilisation — when you don’t have to repeat jobs because of preventable damage to surfaces.

Investing a small amount of your overall construction budget on temporary surface protection can have a positive impact on your performance, profit margins and the confidence of your people. And that’s not just great for your bottom line but for the reputation of your organisation and industry.

Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) and Pultron Composites announced today that they have signed an agreement to create a joint venture to manufacture industry-leading fiberglass rebar.

This agreement solidifies the companies’ commitment to provide more sustainable product solutions and higher performance concrete reinforcement products. It also increases market access to PINKBAR®+ Fiberglas Rebar used for flatwork and residential applications, and MATEENBAR™ Fiberglas™ Rebar used for heavy-load structural applications. Both products carry ACI, ASTM, ICC-ES and CSA Grade III code compliance and are a suitable replacement to steel rebar.

“As we continue to pivot our Composites business to focus on higher-value material solutions, we expect growth in fiberglass rebar to be an important contributor to our strategic direction,” said Marcio Sandri, Owens Corning Composites President. “Joining forces with Pultron Composites combines our core glass-fibre material technology, expansive channel access, and extensive industry experience with Pultron’s manufacturing expertise and process efficiency. This significantly expands our market opportunities, providing additional capacity and exceptional service in the market.”

Over the past 20 years, Pultron Composites has developed a leading fiberglass rebar production process, enabling the execution of substantial fiberglass projects. Fiberglass products are playing an increasingly important role in the concrete reinforcement market and have the potential to transform the industry. Fiberglass rebar is up to seven times lighter than steel, driving greater shipping and labour efficiency, and is a proven corrosion resistant reinforcement, extending the life of concrete which is particularly important when construction materials are exposed to the elements, such as in coastal areas.

“We’re excited to expand our partnership with Owens Corning and leverage the respective strengths of both our companies to accelerate global adoption of fiberglass rebar,” said Jasper Holdsworth, Pultron Composites Chief Executive Officer. “This joint venture will enable us to obtain greater access to the global rebar market, including expansion in the United States.”

The North America rebar market is estimated to be approximately $9 billion, growing at an annual rate of about 4%.

Fiberglass rebar currently constitutes less than 1% of this market and has the potential to significantly grow over the coming years.

Source: Press Release Service – New Zealand

“Postponing a show is not something we take lightly,” says Dana McCurdy, General Manager of Bay Events. “Without any clarity from the government and a clear path out of the red traffic light setting, putting on an exhibition in early May is no longer viable.”

The Tauranga Home Show had been scheduled to run from the 6th through to the 8th of May with exhibits spread across both halls of Trustpower Arena Baypark as well as outdoor displays, food trucks and live cooking shows.

“An event of this scope requires huge forward investment,” says Dana McCurdy, General Manager of Bay Events. “There is a financial risk both on our part as organisers and for our exhibitors and suppliers. We can’t expect other businesses to take on the burden of that risk in good faith, especially as many of them are currently struggling with the impact of global supply chain issues , high employee absenteeism dur to isolation periods, a tight labor market and increases in transport costs.”

Dana anticipates that the postponement will allow time for the Covid-19 peak to pass and for the events industry to return to normal.

“We’ve had so much encouraging feedback from our exhibitors who want the show to go ahead,” says Dana. “It is unfortunate because the show runs like its own self-contained shopping mall – and malls remain open – but as an exhibition we’re in the same category as close-contact crowd events like concerts.”

2022 marks the 23rd annual Tauranga Home Show, and the exhibition continues to expand in size and attendee numbers every year. The event is organised by Bay Events Ltd, a local family-run business that was established in 1995 and have run over 60 exhibitions.

“We see first-hand the contribution our shows make to the local economy because we live here too,” says Dana. “We encourage everybody to continue to support local businesses, and we look forward to bringing them back to meet you face-to-face at our October exhibition.”

The new dates for the Tauranga Home Show are the 28th, 29th and 30th of October 2022 at Trustpower Arena Baypark.

Source: Press Release Service – Auckland

This month globally recognised cabinetry hardware supplier Hettich marks the continuation of the release of its latest product, the Avantech YOU drawer system.

The thin-walled drawer was first made available to New Zealanders late 2020, with this June seeing the number of system components grow to include some spectacular new design elements.

Known as Design Profiles and DesignCapes, these drawer customisations have been designed in acknowledgement of growing consumer trend toward bespoke and personalised experiences.

Where Design Profiles are strips of colour fixed to the top of a drawer side adding a colourful accent when opening and closing a drawer, DesignCapes are fixed overtop of the existing drawer side to completely change the outside colour of the drawers.

The range also now includes Inlay drawer sides and fronts, which allow for changing materials in the fronts and sides of drawers. These design adjustments are commonly seen in pantry drawers in favour of wire baskets, allowing the homeowner to see the drawers contents easily.

Hettich New Zealand’s Managing Director Rob Deed expects AvanTech YOU to cater expertly to the expectations of consumers.

“More than ever, we are seeing recognition and reward for interior design that is bespoke to the stories and lifestyles of those that live in the space. An increased demand for something special requires more creativity in material and colour use, and designers, manufacturers and craftspeople need products than can deliver this without unnecessary cost,” says Deed.

With a nod to nature and perfectly positioned on a ridge leading to a nature reserve, Design Builders’ latest show home is a show stopper. The Harbour View two-storey home was officially open for viewing in April, with visitors welcomed to see what Mark Davidge and the expert team from Design Builders Wellington had created.

The stunning show home features light and dark timber accents to tie in with the natural surroundings, along with clever use of glazing to take advantage of the spectacular views. This unique home was also designed with exceptional indoor-outdoor flow and a spacious layout.

According to Design Builders Wellington Managing Director Mark Davidge, 2 Viewmont Drive makes the most of its natural setting, yet offers a short commute to the city.

With beautiful views over the surrounding countryside and water from both floors, the property is designed to feel closely connected with nature. As you walk through the front door, floating stairs give a stunning view right through to the garden at the rear. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the open-plan central living/dining/kitchen area offer jaw-dropping indoor-outdoor flow.

The Waitemáta Ready to Build plan is well-appointed for outdoor living, with a large concrete paved patio, and black Louvretech room for shade on sunny days. The upper floor of the home overhangs the lower floor, offering the perfect spot for a well-sheltered BBQ.

The connection to nature extends inside to the interior design, too, says Wendy King, Senior Designer at Landmark Homes North Shore, who was involved at every single stage of the project from design to décor decisions.

“Minimal, natural interiors have been in vogue for a while now, and we’ve seen and done a lot of Scandinavian-style interiors with light timbers and white tones. With this Showhome we’re striking out in a braver, bolder direction, with leafy green feature walls, dark marble with rust-coloured veins, walnut, cedar, and stone.”

The annual awards, hosted by Registered Master Landscapers New Zealand, showcase the very best in professional landscaping practices. The awards recognise achievement in landscape construction and design and maintenance across both residential and commercial projects, and represent the highest professional accolade in the industry.

This year’s awards attracted a record number of entries says Registered Master Landscapers chief executive officer, Janine Scott.

“We are thrilled by the level of interest this year, and pleased to see so many new entrants,” says Scott. “In total, we received nearly 90 entries, which is 50 percent up on last year.

“We are also seeing an increase in the quality, scope, and uniqueness of the entries being submitted. Our industry is in good heart despite the challenges of the times and that is a tribute to the dedication and high standards of our members.”

The awards are independently judged by a panel of leading New Zealand landscape industry practitioners, each with their own speciality.

The judges say that, “the Herne Bay House is a triumph of engineering, construction, landscape technology, design, and plant management. The double sloping coastal cliff section has been structurally stabilised in order to support a large house and garden complex. The lush resort-style landscape provides a truly luxurious outdoor living environment, with highest quality materials, planting, and maintenance.

“This garden truly demonstrates a high level of landscape design, engineering and technology, along with masterful gardening, to deliver the Master Landscapers Landscape of the Year for 2021.”

In addition to the supreme Landscape of the Year award, there are several premier categories that recognise the best overall projects from the winning entries. Finalists are recognised for the vision and skill they have demonstrated in New Zealand landscaping projects. Premier award winners are judged across residential and commercial projects categories for: Best Construction Project of the Year, Best Design Project of the Year, Best Horticultural Project of the Year, Best Maintenance Project of the Year, People’s Choice Award, and Special Feature Awards.

This full list of this year’s premier award winners is: Humphreys Landscaping’s entry for the Auckland-based ‘Herne Bay House’ in all three construction, horticulture and design categories, and Diva Landscapes’ entry for Arrowtown’s ‘The Lodge at the Hills’ in the garden maintenance/management category. Special feature awards go to HEB Construction for its entry ‘Maungawhau / Mt Eden Tihi Boardwalk’, and Natural Habitats Landscapes for its entry ‘Westfield Newmarket Greenwalls’.

The 2021 People’s Choice Award was awarded to Christchurch business Onlandscapes Ltd for its entry ‘40 Thorrington Road’.

In fact, Auckland’s fastest population growth is in the South – up 26.3% year on year, according to the 2019 government census. And according to a OneRoof.co.nz property report, South Auckland is set to be the centre of a big housing boom in the coming years too – with the Franklin region in particular a steady performer in South Auckland’s burgeoning real estate market.

Exciting subdivisions abound in the southern area (kicked off in large part the Auckland Unitary Plan in 2016), and Paerata Rise in particular is proving popular as buyers flock to secure their sites.

Landmark Homes is one of the approved Build Partners on this 300-hectare development and opened their distinctive new showhome in December, to show prospective homeowners just what the Landmark team is capable of.

“We wanted to create a home that stood out like a Landmark home should,” says Michael Walters, Landmark Homes Auckland South & Franklin franchisee, who was involved at every stage of the project, from conception to construction to décor decisions.

Thoughtful design details like wheelchair accessibility and landscaped boat parking are sprinkled throughout the carefully-considered build – and take it to a lovel above the rest. “We’ve taken our time and made sure we’ve done it right,” says Michael. “It’s perfect for the discerning second home buyer, who is looking for quality first and foremost.”

Special Features of the new showhome

• Industrial aesthetic and striking slanting roof
• Separate scullery and discreetly designed separate laundry
• Wheelchair accessible front entrance
• LED lighting and smart home installations throughout the property
• 3.5metre sloping ceilings in the entryway and open plan living area offer a sense of space + grandeur
• Large covered deck, complete with outdoor fire and louvre roof for all-weather entertaining
• Designer kitchen and bathrooms
• 2-car garage providing access to secure, hidden and landscaped boat parking out the back

The stunning showhome has all the hallmarks of a fantastic and functional family home – boasting four double bedrooms, central living and dining area, separate lounge, study, laundry, and scullery.

Landmark Homes’ New Home Consultant Trish Dryden says the Richmond Ready to Build plan was chosen for the show home because of its aesthetic. Situated only a stones-throw away from Pisa Moorings, the gabled Hamptons-style profile is a nod to the nautical lakeside spot. “We wanted a design that complemented the area – and the Richmond has that classic Hampton’s feel.”

It didn’t come to life easily, however! “This was a tricky site – it was very long and narrow, with a 20-metre ‘no build zone’ on the back boundary. So, we shortened the standard Richmond plan and reduced the size of the living areas. Essentially, everything was shrunk to fit the build platform.”

With an interior design that has nods to local flora and fauna, and a Scandinavian-style black, white and grey colour palette – this is a contemporary, modern home that is designed to delight.

About Landmark Homes Central Otago

Premium new home builder Landmark Homes Central Otago is an award-winning Registered Master Builder serving Central Otago and Southland. With offices in Queenstown and Wanaka, the team is expert in creating beautiful bespoke homes that fit perfectly amongst the lakes and mountains of the region.
