Four men face charges after a burglary ended up in a responding Police officer being assaulted in Mt Roskill.

Police responded to a burglary in the Mt Roskill area after 7.20pm on Wednesday.

“A man has allegedly forced his way into an elderly woman’s front door, demanding car keys before stealing her vehicle,” Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill, Auckland City West Area Investigation Manager says.

“Units responded to the area to try and locate the vehicle at the time.”

A short time later, a unit sighted the stolen Suzuki Swift turning onto Fearon Avenue.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darvill says the vehicle was followed to an address on Bridgeman Avenue.

“There were four occupants in the vehicle as it came to a stop, units moved in to extract the occupants who were extremely aggressive.

“During the course of arresting these men, one of the passengers allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers.”

A Taser was deployed to take this man into custody.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darvill says the officer was taken for medical checks and is being provided with welfare support.

“This behaviour is totally unacceptable, and we will hold these men to account in the court.

“I acknowledge all our staff that responded last night, which has resulted in four arrests and the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

“The victim of the burglary was not assaulted but is understandably very shaken at what took place last night.”

Police have laid a series of charges as a result:

  • The 34-year-old passenger has been charged with burglary, assaults first responder, resisting Police and possession of methamphetamine.

He will appear in the Auckland District Court today.

  • The 36-year-old driver has been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and resisting Police.
  • Two other passengers, aged 28 and 29, have been charged with resisting Police.

These men will appear in court next week.
