A teenage boy is home safe and dry after becoming stuck on rocks in east Auckland.

Police received a 111 call just after 8pm at Musick Point near Bucklands Beach.

Senior Sergeant Garry Larsen, officer in charge of the Marine Rescue Centre, says the boy had been fishing at the time.

“He realised the tide was coming in quickly, putting him in a tricky spot with the terrain meaning he could not climb out,” he says.

“The Auckland Maritime Unit coordinated the response, deploying the Police Search and Rescue high ropes team to the area.”

The boy was rescued and able to return home safely.

Senior Sergeant Larsen says the teenager did the right thing in calling 111.

“Our advice for anyone heading out on the water or going fishing is to be prepared.

“It’s a good reminder with lighter evenings and summer around the corner to play close attention to tides and conditions on the water,” he says.

Police advice for the warmer months is to always know your limits and have a few modes of communication if something goes wrong.

Always tell someone where you’re going, and when you’re due back.
