Fire and Emergency New Zealand was alerted to a five-hectare scrub and grass vegetation fire on Far North Road in Te Kao at 9.48am today. Firefighters from Houhora and Kaitaia responded, supported by two helicopters. Fire and Emergency and Police have evacuated ten houses as a precaution, with the residents likely to be returned home this afternoon. The fire is currently contained, but windy conditions have made firefighting difficult.
