Plumbing apprentice Rory Read, 25, has cut his teeth on some of Wanaka’s large-scale architectural homes.
These technically detailed builds can take up to two years to complete. Not for the faint-hearted, they require careful coordination between architects, project managers, builders, plumbers and other specialist trades.
The high quality of Rory’s work has earned him a Plumbing World Scholarship at the 2026 New Zealand Plumbing Awards, held at Claudelands in Hamilton [26 June 2026].
Rory is among only three apprentices around New Zealand to receive one of the $1,000 scholarships, presented each year to promising apprentices completing their apprenticeships through the Master Plumbers-owned Masterlink group training scheme.
A fourth-year plumbing and drainlaying apprentice at McIvor Plumbers & Gasfitters Wanaka, Rory has matured into a professional communicator on site, says managing director Ashley McIvor.
“Rory consistently demonstrates pride in his workmanship and takes the time to ensure his work is completed to a high standard.
“His positive attitude and willingness to help others make him a valued member of our crew.”
Frequent design changes on large construction projects can be a challenge when plumbing systems have already been planned or partially installed.
These demands have honed Rory’s problem-solving skills and given him a good understanding of the importance of forward planning.
He is grateful for the knowledge he has gained from the experienced tradespeople he works alongside.
With his growing technical abilities and professional attitude, Rory has what it takes to become a future leader in the plumbing industry.
