Local Master Plumbers are volunteering their labour to help turn Hamilton’s historic World War II era hall in Flynn Park into a multi-functional Community Woodcraft and Arts Hub.
Their efforts were acknowledged at the 2026 New Zealand Plumbing Awards [26 June 2026), when they received the coveted ‘Kava Cup’ trophy, awarded to a Master Plumbers branch for their involvement in a worthwhile local cause.
The Waikato Guild of Woodworkers is leading the project, which will result in a safe, inclusive space for hands-on workshops, youth programmes, community groups, and public exhibitions to showcase local craftsmanship.
The guild approached Waikato Master Plumbers for help and have been blown away by the expertise, services and support local member businesses have been willing to share.
Suppliers have also come to the party, donating sanitaryware, a hot water cylinder, pipework and fittings.
Work carried out by local plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers to date has included alterations to the existing sewer drainage, installation of a new watermain, and toilets, taps, tub and kitchenette for the new amenities block.
The second stage of works is due to start very soon.
“This project is a win for all,” says Waikato Master Plumbers President Mike Wilson. “It is cost-effective, community-led, and an ideal opportunity for a meaningful partnership between the building industry and the wider community.
“It offers a highly visible, tangible demonstration of how skilled trades can contribute to civic renewal-preserving Hamilton’s heritage while creating a future-focused, inclusive hub for learning, creativity, and connection.”
