State Highway 3 (SH3) at the Rangitikei Street/Featherston Street intersection in Palmerston North will be under temporary traffic management for 6 nights, starting on Thursday 6 June through to Thursday 13 June (no crews will be working Friday or Saturday nights).
During this week of night work from 6pm to 6am, the traffic signals at the intersection will be upgraded and line marking on the road surface updated. A camera will also be installed at the intersection to allow for live adjustments to the signal phasing to ensure the intersection is operating efficiently.
The work is part of Palmerston North City Council’s Featherston Street cycleway project(external link)
- Thursday 6 June – traffic signals: both sides of the road at the intersection on Featherston Street (Mitre 10 side) will be closed. A local road detour will be in place via North and Ngata Streets. SH3 traffic will not be able to turn at the intersection into this side of Featherston Street.
- Sunday 9 June – traffic signals: both sides of the road at the intersection on Featherston Street (McDonald’s side) will be closed. A local road detour will be in place via Taonui and Aroha streets. SH3 traffic will not be able to turn at the intersection into this side of Featherston Street.
- Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 June – traffic signals: one side of the intersection on SH3 Rangitikei Street will be closed and a short section of contraflow in place alongside stop/go to ensure traffic can continue to flow in both directions. Contraflow is where traffic travelling in both directions uses one side of the road, while the other side is being worked on. The next night, the same thing will happen on the other side of the intersection on SH3 Rangitikei Street.
- Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June – line-marking: crews will likely start line-marking on Featherston Street before moving to Rangitikei Street. The same traffic management will apply as earlier in the week when crews are working on each side of the intersection.
If unforeseen delays require a further night of work. it will be Sunday 16 June. This work is weather dependent so may need to be postponed.
All businesses and footpaths in the area will remain accessible each night of work.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi wants to thank road users for their patience while the signal upgrades and line-marking happen.
