Plans for the creation of a living green open space on the Waitematā harbour, including a park, access to Wynyard Wharf and new laneways and streets have been endorsed by Waitematā Local Board, laying the foundation for the next stage of development on Wynyard Point.

The board endorsed the vision for Te Ara Tukutuku project at its December meeting, allowing Eke Panuku, which has been working on the vision and framework phase with Mana Whenua and the project design collective Toi Waihanga, to continue this important mahi as the project moves into the concept design stage.

The vision for the project is to create a living green open space sitting on the Waitematā harbour, a space to rebind the relationship between Tangaroa (the ocean) and Papatūānuku (Mother Earth), connecting people back to the water.

“Te Ara Tukutuku will enable a number of fantastic additions to the area,” says local board chair Geneveive Sage.

“It will be awesome for the central city to have an extra open space for residents and visitors to enjoy and connect with the sea.

“The board is pleased to endorse the project and looks forward to seeing its progress over the coming years.”

Feedback received from the public will inform the concept design.

Current work on site is focused on introducing Te Ara Tukutuku to the public through activation, education opportunities and signage.

Early works that are focused on contamination and remediation can start onsite in late 2024, in the earthworks season, with site remediation and demolition.

Stages will be planned over multiple years to suit budgets.

The first stage over the next 2-3 years is to heal and transition from the industrial past, by undertaking the following activities:

  • Site testing and monitoring

  • Relationship building and education

  • Event outreach programme

  • Marine trials

  • Establish site nursery

  • Design testing and feedback

  • Consenting and approvals

  • Enabling works
