Four people will face court following two fleeing driver incidents across Tāmaki Makaurau during the early hours of this morning.

At around 3.18am, Police have signalled for the driver of a vehicle travelling on Dominion Road, Mount Roskill to stop.

Auckland City West’s Acting Area Commander, Inspector Wayne Kitcher, says the vehicle appeared to be travelling in tandem with another vehicle and failed to stop.

“Upon noticing Police, one of the vehicles has left the area at high speed, while the second vehicle followed in the same direction.

“The Police Eagle helicopter has continued to track both vehicles and provided commentary, guiding staff in to locate the occupants of one vehicle as they decamped,” he says.

“The driver of the vehicle was also observed by Eagle doing multiple burnouts, including at intersections.

“This type of driving behaviours not only puts the occupants of the vehicle in danger, but also puts other members of the public at risk.”

The second vehicle was located by Police a short time later in Mount Roskill and was approached by Police.

Inspector Kitcher says the vehicle slowed before taking off at excessive speed and onto the motorway heading through Auckland City and into Counties Manukau.

“The vehicle eventually stopped, after being spiked twice, on the Southern Motorway near Rosehill.

“The two occupants have attempted to escape on foot but were caught by staff.

“I would like to commend this excellent work by staff who managed to chase the offenders down on foot.

“They were both taken into custody without further incident.”

A 14-year-old charged with operating a motor vehicle recklessly, failing to stop and unlawfully taking a vehicle will appear in Auckland Youth Court today.

Two 15-year-olds will appear in Auckland Youth Court today charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle.

A 20-year-old male will appear in Auckland District Court on 2 November charged with unlawfully getting into a vehicle.
