Overnight works are planned for the roundabout at the State Highway 51/Georges Drive intersection with Latham Street in Napier.
From Sunday 8 October, the intersection will close for five nights between 6pm and 6am while crews work to install a new concrete apron around the roundabout.
The new apron will better differentiate the road from the roundabout, ensuring people correctly and safely use the roundabout when travelling through that intersection, rather than driving straight over it.
The site has recorded a number of crashes in recent years from vehicles incorrectly using the roundabout.
Signposted detours will be available. Light vehicles heading south will be detoured down Rose Street, Vigor Brown Street, and Campaign Street before rejoining SH51/Georges Drive. Northbound vehicles will use the same detour in reverse.
Motorists travelling down Latham Steet towards Napier will be detoured right onto Douglas McLean and left onto Ellison Street before rejoining SH51.
Heavier vehicles will be detoured down Marine Parade and onto SH50 near Napier Port.
While the overnight closures are in place, access will remain for residents in the area.
It’s expected the overnight work will minimise the disruption to traffic and Waka Kotahi wants to thank residents in advance for their support during this time.
