2023 Census timeline
This media advisory provides key operational dates for the 2023 Census in the lead up to Census Day on 7 March 2023. Note the operational period for the census starts 13 February 2023.

Public census helpline opens: 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) will be open seven days a week from 8am to 10pm until the end of March. There will be extended hours from 6am to 12am from 5 to 7 March (Census Day). From 1 April to 26 May 2023, the helpline will be open from 8am to 5pm. |

13 February |
Census collectors are in communities, hand delivering census packs to selected addresses. https://www.census.govt.nz/about-the-census/how-you-will-get-your-2023-census-forms/ Note: People can complete their census forms as soon as they get them. |

The first mailout of census packs will start landing in people’s letterboxes. Households will either receive:
