2023 Census timeline

This media advisory provides key operational dates for the 2023 Census in the lead up to Census Day on 7 March 2023. Note the operational period for the census starts 13 February 2023.

Launch of main marketing campaign – starting with “All of Us” TV and digital advertising

Public census helpline opens:

0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) will be open seven days a week from 8am to 10pm until the end of March.

There will be extended hours from 6am to 12am from 5 to 7 March (Census Day).

From 1 April to 26 May 2023, the helpline will be open from 8am to 5pm.

13 February

Census collectors are in communities, hand delivering census packs to selected addresses.

Note: People can complete their census forms as soon as they get them.

From 21 February

The first mailout of census packs will start landing in people’s letterboxes.

Households will either receive:

  • a letter with an online access code to do the census online,
  • or a pack with an online census code and paper forms.

Anyone can call the helpline to order paper forms including bilingual English/re reo Māori and Large Print.

Note: People can complete their census forms as soon as they get them.
