The Justice Committee is seeking submissions on the Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) (Overseas Travel Reporting) Amendment Bill and Supplementary Order Paper (SOP) No 175.
The bill and SOP would amend the Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Government Agency Registration) Act 2016 (the Act). The bill would require registered child sex offenders to provide additional information to Police before travelling overseas. The information includes details about their passports and where they intend to stay.
SOP No 175 aims to ensure that the individuals listed on the New Zealand Child Sex Offender Register are subject to Customs Service Border Alerts. The alerts notify overseas jurisdictions of the impending arrival of a New Zealand child sex offender, where considered appropriate. The SOP would allow for the exchange of information between Customs and Police to enable Police to locate a registrable offender and ensure they complied with sections 21 to 23 of the Act.
