Calling all researchers with an interest in gender and diversity!

Hosted by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, the cross-disciplinary Gender and Diversity Research Group (GDRG) welcomes staff and students from across and beyond AUT.

Established in 2007, the group is engaged with a variety of respected research networks and initiatives in NZ and worldwide. Overseas activities include convening specialist streams at prestigious international conferences and running an international action group at the 2022 Gender, Work and Organization (GWO) conferences in Colombia, South America.

This year, GDRG is also editing a special issue of the A journal Gender, Work and Organization entitled “The answer lies in our humanity: research and methodologies that facilitate healing and hope”.

The response to the special issue has been strong, with nearly 30 submissions received from around the world – including several from our AUT academics.

As part of its mandate to support new research and researchers, GDRG hosts an annual postgraduate research seminar day that is open to students from all academic disciplines.

The recent 2022 session included presentations that ranged from the local board experience within Auckland Council, and the power of “tempered radicals” within organisations, to the role of pay transparency in achieving gender equity, and using collage-making to explore the experiences of young workers.

“We see it as a place for not just sharing research but also building confidence within individual students and helping to build a community around them,” says GDRG co-convener Dr Barbara Myers (Department of Management). “We work hard to make it a low key, fun, and supportive space for them, so we operate as critical friends in a safe way.”

If you missed this year’s postgraduate seminar, there is still an opportunity to get involved in gender and diversity research.

On 17 November, the group will facilitate its annual Gender and Diversity Research Day. The event combines academic research and community engagement, featuring speakers from and outside of AUT with a focus on topical issues. This year, GDRG will join with National Council of Women (Auckland Branch) to mark over 126 years of NCW activism to achieve true gender equality in NZ society. The title of the seminar is: “Celebrating a century of social activism: but wait…there’s more to be done.”
