Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency welcomes Coroner Windley’s report into the fatal bus crash on Ohakune Mountain Road on 28 July 2018 and supports all the recommendations made in the report.
“Waka Kotahi would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Hannah Francis, the 11-year-old schoolgirl who died in the bus crash,” Director of Land Transport Kane Patena says.
“While the release of Coroner Windley’s report today will do nothing to lessen Hannah’s family’s grief, it might help prevent such a tragedy from occurring again.
“In her report, the Coroner makes 11 recommendations to avoid this sort of incident in the future involving driver training, seat belts for passenger vehicles, suggested roading and signage improvements on Ohakune Mountain Road, more focus on passenger vehicle servicing, a revision of the Alpine Code and the possible introduction of a new driver licence endorsement for operating a passenger service vehicle in alpine conditions.
“Waka Kotahi supports all the recommendations and will be working with the Ministry of Transport, NZ Police, WorkSafe, the Bus and Coach Association and other organisations to ensure they are implemented.”
