Police can confirm a person has died following the earlier single-vehicle crash on Waipapa Road, Wharepapa South.
Police were notified of the crash just after 6.15pm.
A second person was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
The road remains closed and diversions are in place.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
