The Ministry of Education’s fifth application round to establish partnership schools is the first in which tertiary education institutions (TEIs) are eligible to apply.
Applications for Round 5 opened on 13 February, with successful applicants expected to open schools in 2019. It is anticipated that the round will deliver five new schools.
The Ministry is inviting two types of applications for this round – applications with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) focus and applications with a priority learner focus.
The Ministry refers to partnership schools (Kura Hourua) as “a new type of school in the New Zealand education system, focused on improving educational outcomes for those groups of students who the system as not served well. This includes Māori, Pasifika, students with special needs and students from low socio-economic backgrounds.” The schools contract with the Government to meet specified, rigorous educational standards in return for freedom to innovate.

TEIs who are interested in applying to sponsor a partnership school should refer to the Expression of Interest on the Governments Electronic Tender Site (GETS).
