A total of $134,897.92 has been allocated to community groups under Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board’s grants programme.
Grants cover everything from community resilience efforts and education to environmental protection, local events and community-owned alternative energy facility upgrades.
Local board chair Izzy Fordham says supporting the community with funding is a privilege and something the board is very pleased to be able to do.
Among the successful applicants was Aotea Family Support Group which received $2600 towards their Aotea Curtain Bank programme.
Another successful applicant, Aotea TV, received $5000 towards camera gear and other technical equipment.
The island’s inaugural The Wingman Festival, happening at the Claris Sports and Social Club grounds over New Year’s Eve, received $10,000 towards festival coordinator costs.

Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board has regular grant rounds available to support local initiatives in the areas of arts, community, environment, events, heritage and sports and recreation.
The next grant round opens for applications on 18 January 2021.
