Mill Road users- plan your route!
Drivers are asked to use different roads during the next couple of months as work progresses on the $2 million, 25-year-upgrade of Mill Road. Work on the south end of Mill Road starts on 26 September and should be complete by early December. Further works on the north of Nixon Street will be completed early next year.

“The roadwork will include taking off the old pavement and replacing it with new, that should last about 25 years, so it’s a big project,” said Shakhin Sharma, Northland Transportation Alliance Renewals Lead.
“Northbound traffic (except for emergency vehicles and residents) will be unable to use Mill Road between Donald Street and Parahaki Street for the next four weeks or so, as we work first on one side of this stretch of Mill Road and then on the other.
“We are starting this project in the school holidays to help with traffic flow and reduce interruptions. These works will take a number of weeks and should be finished by early December. This project at Mill Road will be a 24 hour operation, this helps us to speed up the construction period and also ensures that the timeframe for disruptions to motorists is reduced.
“Mill Road residents and visitors will still be able to get to the places they need to, but we encourage through traffic to use other routes to get from the city to places north and east, or from the north and east into the city.
Nixon Street end of Mill Road
When the Regent end of Mill Road is complete, we will move up the road to the section between Parahaki Street and Nixon Street. Both lanes of this section will be closed (except to residents and emergency vehicles). We will be publicising detour routes on side streets ahead of schedule and taking measures to improve safety on side streets while the diversions are in place.
Electronic sign boards will be going up at the Regent intersection of Bank Street, Manse Street, Kamo Road, Mill Road and Donald Street this week warning of traffic changes.
Plan your route before you get to Mill Road
When heading north to Kamo, Tikipunga or Whareora Road consider using the following routes before you get to Mill Road:
Hātea Drive • Western Hills Drive (SH1) • Kamo road.
When heading south into or through the city from Kamo, Tikipunga or Whareora Road consider using the following routes before you get to Mill Road:
Hātea Drive • Western Hills Drive (SH1) • Kamo road.
We encourage school traffic to use Kamo Road so they can use the dedicated turn into Manse Street.
