Expired WOF, fresh charges

An expired warrant of fitness and vehicle licence are the least of two Auckland men’s problems, as they face court on drugs and firearms charges.

It began as a routine traffic stop on Stoddard Road, Mt Roskill on Tuesday evening.

Sergeant Mike Read, from Auckland City West Tactical Crime Unit, says a unit spotted a vehicle just before 6pm.

“Checks indicated the Honda CRV had an expired warrant of fitness, and its vehicle licence was out of date, so the vehicle was signalled to stop,” he says.

“On approaching the vehicle, a rifle was seen on the back seat of the car.”

This discovery invoked a further search of the CRV.

Sergeant Reid says a pistol was also located in the driver’s footwell of the vehicle.

“Both the driver and passenger were detained on the roadside,” he says.

But it didn’t end there. A further search allegedly located packaged methamphetamine on the driver and inside the vehicle.

Nearly $2000 in cash was also seized.

Police have since confirmed both items were an air rifle and air pistol, Sergeant Reid says.

“This is a fantastic result from our team, with these illicit and dangerous items now out of circulation in our community.”

The two men will appear in the Auckland District Court today.

The 38-year-old driver has been charged with two counts of unlawful possession of the air rifle and pistol, possession for supply of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine utensils.

The passenger, a 27-year-old, has also been charged with possession for supply of methamphetamine.

ENDS.
