Komal Saddi will add a valedictorian honour to her second master’s degree when she graduates from EIT Auckland this week.

The 35-year-old will graduate with a Master of Health Science and deliver a valedictory address as one of two valedictorians at EIT Auckland’s graduation ceremonies at Aotea Square tomorrow (Tuesday, May 19).

“It definitely means a lot. I’m feeling truly honoured and privileged. It’s a very big milestone for me and for my family. I’m extremely grateful.”

Komal Saddi will graduate with a Master of Health Science from EIT Auckland and deliver a valedictory address at one of two graduation ceremonies tomorrow (Tuesday, May 19).

Komal says she has always aimed high academically, but being selected as valedictorian still came as a surprise.

“When I first received the email, I was surprised. I’m highly grateful to my teachers for nominating me for that.”

She says she sees the title as carrying a responsibility to inspire others.

“A valedictorian is somebody who inspires others. If you can make it, then others can make it too.”

Originally from India, Komal moved to New Zealand alone to continue her studies after already completing a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology and a Master of Clinical Microbiology.

She chose EIT’s Master of Health Science programme as part of her long-term goal of pursuing a PhD and says the course content immediately stood out.

“I looked into the course and subjects like digital health and the other subjects really interested me. I really liked the course and its content.”

Komal says she chose New Zealand after hearing about the country and its education system from her older brother, who had already been living here for several years.

Moving to New Zealand was also Komal’s first experience living or travelling outside India. She says adjusting to a new country and education system came with challenges.

“The education system in India is different, so I had to adapt and learn a lot.”

Since completing her studies, Komal has secured a job as a medical laboratory technician.

Komal is quick to credit EIT’s support.

“EIT has always been there for me whenever I needed help. I’m extremely grateful to my teachers. They have helped me professionally as well.”

Looking back on her journey so far, Komal says moving to New Zealand has helped her grow both personally and professionally.

“I have grown personally and learned a lot. New Zealand is a very beautiful country.”

EIT Auckland Campus Director Cherie Freeman said: “EIT is incredibly proud of Komal Saddi’s outstanding achievement as valedictorian”.

“Her academic excellence, courage in pursuing her dreams abroad, and commitment to making a difference truly embody the spirit and success we strive for at EIT, and we look forward to the impact she will continue to make in the health sciences field.”
