Local artists have the opportunity to see their work on display in public and up in lights.
Porirua City Council is seeking artists to feature over winter 2024 and summer 2024/2025 in the city’s lightboxes. Each lightbox exhibition will run for about five months, with six works by a single artist or collective on display during each exhibition.
The lightboxes were installed in Porirua city centre in mid-2022 to showcase local artists and their work, says Pātaka Art + Museum Director, Ana Sciascia.
“They provide an opportunity for curators and artists to exhibit work in a dynamically urban, high-profile environment.”
The lightboxes stand at 3 metres tall and can be found in the spine of Porirua’s CBD, Te Manawa, running from Hagley St to Ferry Pl.
Artists who have already had their work featured in the lightboxes include Kohai Grace, Ruth Robertson-Taylor and Miriama Grace-Smith.
Prior to Christmas, local artist Sherri Kanavatoa had a selection of her work installed in the lightboxes, as part of a series called Don’t Touch My Hair (2022).
The lightbox artworks are digital files printed on vinyl that is then adhered directly to the glass panel door of each light box. They are backlit at night, so the artwork is visible at any time of day.
“The lightboxes support Porirua artists and are an opportunity for local communities to experience the creative talent that we have in our city,” says Ana.
