Planned night works will begin around the Auckland Port area on State Highway 1 (SH1) and State Highway 16 (SH16) from this Sunday 24 March, between 10pm and 5am.
Full closures at night will be required while crews carry out paving, excavation and installation work as part of a nationwide project called the Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme (formally known as Weigh Right), which is developing an integrated network of number plate recognition cameras, weigh-in-motion scales and safety centres covering strategic routes across New Zealand. It supports the design of a safe and productive land transport system and creates a level playing field for the heavy vehicle industry.
Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme
Weigh-in-motion technology for heavy vehicles will be installed at five sites in the Port area. This work is expected to take approximately 5 months and will include periodic overnight closures.
To set up the closure safely, crews may need to put ramp closures and lane restrictions in place before the advertised closure times. Drivers are urged to plan for delays to their journey at these times.

SH1 eastbound by Grafton Bridge
Full closure from SH1 northbound Symonds Street to SH16 eastbound Port link.
- Sun 24 to Wed 27 March between 10pm and 5am
- Mon 1 to Wed 3 April between 10pm and 5am
- Thu 11 April between 10pm and 5am
- Sun 14 to Thu 18 April between 10pm and 5am

Ramp closures
- SH1 northbound Wellesley Street off-ramp (exit 429 B)
- SH1 northbound Port off-ramp (exit 429 C)
Recommended detour: Exit at SH1 Symonds Street northbound off-ramp (exit 429B) and detour via Symonds Street and Grafton Road.
SH16 eastbound by Symonds Street
Full eastbound closure from SH1 southbound and SH16 westbound to SH16 East Port link.

Recommended detour
SH1 southbound: exit at SH1 southbound Fanshawe Street off-ramp and detour via Fanshawe Street and Hobson Street to SH1 Hobson Street southbound on-ramp.
SH1 southbound to SH16 Port: exit at SH1 southbound Fanshawe Street off-ramp and detour via Fanshawe Street, Customs Street East and Beach Road.
SH16 eastbound to Port: take link to SH1 southbound Hamilton (Exit 4 C). Exit at Gillies Ave and turn around using the Gillies Ave northbound on-ramp. Travel north on SH1 and take the SH1 northbound Port off-ramp (exit 429 C).
SH16 eastbound on Stanley Street
Work expected to start May 2024.
SH16 westbound on The Strand
Work expected to start May/ June 2024.
