Road crews will be hard at work on State Highway 1 near the Basin Reserve next Thursday night (14 March).

Resurfacing works are planned for the intersection of State Highway 1 and Adelaide Road. The work is essential maintenance required for an urban stretch of  State Highway 1 that carries around 16 thousand vehicles every day.

While traffic will still be able to travel on State Highway 1 around the Basin Reserve, the entrance and exit from Adelaide Road will be closed between midnight and 5:30am.

Initial works will begin at 7pm and drivers can expect delays while traffic management is put in place.

To ensure disruption is kept to an absolute minimum, the resurfacing will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower.

Local road detours will be available, but drivers  can expect longer travel time – especially when travelling between Newtown and the Wellington CBD.

NZTA/Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance want to thank drivers in advance for their patience and cooperation while this work is underway.

Motorists are asked to obey all traffic management controls and temporary speed limits. This ensures everyone, road crews and road users, are kept safe.

Works location and detour routes

  • Thursday, 14 March/Friday, 15 March.
  • Works begin from 7 pm.
  • Access to Adelaide Rd closed at SH1 from midnight to 5:30 am.
  • Local road detours available for traffic travelling to/from Newtown via Tasman/Rugby and Taranaki/Wallace Streets.
