IHC is proud to announce the judges for the 2024 IHC Art Awards, including artist Michel Tuffery who will judge the new Holdsworth Trust Scholarship Award for art studios.
Mark Hutchins-Pond, Elizabeth Caldwell and Tim Walker will judge the individual entries in the annual showcase for the artistic talents of people with intellectual disabilities.
The Holdsworth Trust Scholarship Award award offers a prize of $5,000 to the winning art base or studio for materials, equipment or tutor salaries.
Merrill Holdsworth of the Holdsworth family, says the Art Awards could not happen without the support of the art bases and studios.
“Almost all entrants are from artists working in either a school or an art base. We rely on these art bases to nurture the artists and their works, then select, package and send entries for judging and exhibiting.
“The new award will enable the Holdsworth Charitable Trust to give recognition and a financial contribution to one participating art base each year.”
Michel Tuffery is a New Zealand-born artist of Samoan, Rarotongan and Tahitian Ma‘ohi heritage.
Renowned as a sculptor, painter, printmaker and for his architectural media artworks, Michel is a keen historian and active participant in contemporary culture. His art is displayed in major international exhibitions and programmes, as well as public and private collections.
Mark, Elizabeth and Tim are returning to the judges’ panel for the individual awards.
Mark Hutchins-Pond has extensive art sector expertise acquired over three decades of studying, writing, presenting, critiquing, and championing the best contemporary fine art in the country. He is currently an art specialist at Webbs after a decade as the contemporary art lead curator at the Pātaka Art+Museum in Porirua.
Elizabeth Caldwell has been working in the culture sector in Aotearoa for more than 30 years and received an ONZM for her services to the arts in the 2022 King’s New Year Honours. She is currently heading up a new division of Napier City Council as Manager Arts, Culture and Heritage.
Fifth-time Art Awards judge, Tim Walker, is an Auckland-based arts and culture consultant with more than three decades’ experience in the art gallery sector.
About the IHC Art Awards
The IHC Art Awards is an annual showcase of the talent and achievements of people with intellectual disabilities. Entries are open to New Zealanders aged 13 or over with an intellectual disability or an intellectual disability and autism.
This year the Holdsworth Charitable Trust is sponsoring a new prize for art studios.
The awards are judged by a high-profile panel of New Zealanders, mostly artists or art professionals. In previous years, we have hosted Libby Hunsdale, Oscar Kightley and Otis Frizzell on the judging panel.
Entries open for the 2024 IHC Art Awards on Monday 1 April and close on Tuesday 30 April, with the winners of the first, second and third place, L’affare People’s Choice, Youth Award and the Holdsworth Trust Scholarship Award announced in July.

Studios can submit up to three artworks by different artists for the Holdsworth Trust Scholarship Award. The individual entries in the studio award are eligible to win first, second, third or the People’s Choice award in the general competition.
The judges will select the 30 finalists including the first, second, third and the Youth Award winners from all the entries received.
