One person has been airlifted to hospital and five others are also injured following the crash on State Highway 2 near Dannevirke.
The crash shortly before 5:45pm involved four vehicles.
The status of the six injured ranges from moderate to critical.
State Highway 2 is closed between Ruahine Street and Otanga Road , and is expected to remain so for another couple of hours.
