The highway was cleared and reopened to traffic around 1 am.

Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers for the patience and understanding during this closure.


11pm update

State Highway 1 remains closed to traffic following a serious crash south of Picton.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is at the scene and the highway is expected to remain closed for several hours while they complete their investigation.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and can expect significant travel delays until the highway reopens.

While a lengthy local road detour is available via Queen Charlotte Drive, it is only suitable for light vehicles. It cannot be used by heavy vehicles.

9:50pm update

State Highway 1 is currently closed at near Mount Pleasant, south of Picton following a serious crash earlier this evening.

The two-car crash was reported shortly after 9 pm.

Emergency services are at the scene.

Drivers travelling between Picton and Blenheim should avoid the area or delay their journey.

A detour via Queen Charlotte Drive is only suitable for small vehicles.

Drivers can expect significant delays.
