The southbound lanes of the motorway have now reopened at the Ngauranga Flyover.

However, the incident has created significant congestion on State Highway 1 for southbound traffic.

Drivers can continue to expect travel delays until the queued traffic clears.


Update 8:40 am:

The southbound lanes of State Highway 1 into Wellington remain closed due to protest action at the Ngauranga Gorge flyover.

The incident was first reported around 7.45 am. Police and contractors are at the scene.

While drivers can avoid the flyover and detour into the city via Old Hutt Rd, there are significant traffic queues on State Highway 1 heading into the city and road users can expect lengthy travel delays.

Drivers heading to the city are urged to avoid the area, consider an alternative route, or delay their journey.

Commuters heading into the Wellington CBD can expect delays this morning because of protest action on the motorway.

Protestors are on a gantry on the Ngauranga flyover. For safety reasons, the highway’s southbound lanes have been closed.

Police and contractors are at the scene.
