From Wednesday 26 July, a section of SH2/Maunganui Road at ground level will be temporarily closed overnight for northbound traffic, as construction continues as part of the Bay Link project.

The overnight closure is required to switch traffic before continuing road reconstruction on the remaining northbound lane of Maunganui Road between Exeter Street and Concord Avenue. Following the switch, road users will continue to travel in a single lane.

Temporary changes for road users

During these hours, the following detours will apply:

  • For Maunganui Road northbound between Exeter Street and Bayfair roundabout (for access to Matapihi or Girven roads) detour via the Bayfair flyover, using the Golf Road roundabout to turnaround to SH2/Maunganui Road southbound.
  • For light vehicles travelling Maunganui Road northbound between the Bayfair roundabout and Concord Avenue (coming from Matapihi or Girven roads), detour via Girven Road, Oceanbeach Road and Golf Road. Vehicles over 12m long will be permitted through the closure at the Bayfair roundabout.

This work is weather-dependent. If it is delayed because of weather or other unforeseen issues, it will be carried out on the next suitable night/s.

While this work is underway, people are advised to allow extra time, drive with caution through the project site, reduce speed and follow the directions provided on traffic management signage.

In August, there will be further overnight closures of the Bayfair flyover and of SH2/Tauranga Eastern Link as part of the Bay Link project. Further information will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Waka Kotahi thanks drivers, local residents and businesses for their patience as we continue to progress the Bay Link project.
