A group allegedly trying to steal clothing from a retailer in Botany were quickly apprehended yesterday.

The incident at a clothing store was reported just after 5pm, where the group attempted to take clothing from the store at Botany Town Centre.

Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Rakana Cook, says security staff disturbed the group, who dropped what they had picked up.

“One of the group has hit one of the security staff before they all fled on foot,” he says.

The security guard fortunately did not suffer serious injuries and Police were immediately contacted.

“Our staff soon located where the group had gone and caught up with them on Te Irirangi Drive,” Inspector Cook says.

“After some good footwork, the group were soon in Police custody.”

The group of three females and two males were all aged between 12 and 17.

“Police are considering appropriate enforcement action in this case,” Inspector Cook says.

“Police are continuing to take offending against retail businesses in our community seriously, identifying offenders and holding them to account.

“We are continuing to work alongside our partners to reduce harm on our town centres and retailers.”
