In direct response to the overwhelming demand from the community, Hāpai te Hauora have collaborated with Community Partner Discipline Performance to bring together a concert which showcases incredible talent and exhilarating performances, whilst also serving as a platform for raising awareness of the benefits of a Smokefree Aotearoa.
Hāpai te Hauora Interim CEO, Jason Alexander says “This concert is a testament to our communities, and reminds us that our role is to actively engage with our community and deliver Hauora in a way that resonate with their values.” Despite Smoking rates continuing on a downward trajectory, Alexander continues to hold concerns “Whilst we have been successful in reducing smoking rates for wāhine Māori, it still remains a huge problem in our communities, and vaping is one of those emerging issues of concern, particularly for Rangatahi Māori.
The line-up of musicians is carefully curated to reflect the diverse musical tastes of communities. Deach Faafou, Director of Discipline Performance and well-known music artist says ” ‘Switch it up’ is more than just a concert; it’s a movement, a celebration of embracing change and creating a healthier future.
Te Kaha o te Rangatahi Community Activator Debi Kapa, who has worked with communities in Auahi kore says that through integrating education and entertainment, the hopes are to inspire positive change and encourage communities to make healthier choices, creating a lasting impact on the well-being of our community. “We believe that the success of any event lies in listening to the community and addressing their concerns. Events like the ‘Switch it Up’ concert are critical to us having the important conversations with our communities – particularly on difficult topics like smoking”. Kapa continues “Smokefree Practitioners will be available for whānau to talk to directly about any smoking or vaping issues they may have”.
To kick off this event, Hāpai te Hauora is hosting a free “Whānau Day”, open to everyone to attend from 1pm to 4pm, before the ‘Switch it up’ concert. The Whānau Day will provide an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate, and engage in various activities that promote unity and well-being. “Come for the music, stay for your hauora” says Faafou.
From interactive games to educational spaces, local vendors to food trucks, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. “This is one of many Smokefree May Events happening across Aotearoa this month” says Alexander. “We are proud to partner with local communities and health providers dedicated to promoting Auahi kore environments”
