The Whakatu Expressway, between Quarantine Road and the Richmond Deviation, is closed following an earlier crash.
Emergency services were called to Whakatu Drive, Stoke around 1.30am.
One person was located deceased at the scene.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
Road closures are expected to remain in place for some time.
