Native plants are not only loved by native birds for the food and habitats they provide, but are good for stabilising your soil and absorbing rainwater.
Having backyards planted with natives across Tāmaki Makaurau is good for the movement and survival of native birds, insects and lizards and it helps mitigate the effects of flooding.
Consider diversity in your backyard planting – there’s a suitable native plant for most situations:
Manuka
If you’re concerned about soil stability on your property, manuka is a fast-growing plant which will quickly lay down roots and bind the soil together. There are lots of different colours and forms of manuka to choose from so you’re sure to find one to suit your garden.
Oioi
Oioi is a dense grass that is usually found next to estuaries and waterways, it’s great for slowing the flow of water. It also produces beautiful red/pink flowers in summer which are a rich source of food and habitat for native insects. Native lizards hide in the dense grass too.
Corokia
A versatile plant that can be trimmed into hedges of all sizes and a great source of wind protection. Corokia also produce yellow flowers in spring and is pollinated by one of our native bee species.
Tawhirikaro
This slow-growing plant introduces diversity to your backyard and will do well in the semi-shade of other plants. The dainty clusters of flowers vary in colour and are lightly scented, bringing your spring garden to life.
