Crash partially closes State Highway 1 – Wellington urban motorway

Update 12 March, 12:05 am – The Wellington urban motorway – State Highway 1 – is now fully open following a serious crash earlier this evening.

The crash scene was investigated and cleared, and the southbound lanes of the motorway reopened at around midnight.

Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers for their patience and cooperation during this incident.


Update 11 March, 8pm:

The southbound lanes of State Highway 1, Wellington urban motorway, remain closed following a serious crash earlier this evening.

Police confirm the crash involved a car and a motorbike, and one person has been seriously injured.

The southbound lanes will remain closed after the Aotea Quay off-ramp while the Police Serious Crash Unit investigates.

Traffic heading into the city can continue to exit the motorway at the Aotea Quay off-ramp.


11 March, 7pm:

Due to a serious crash near the Murphy Street offramp, the southbound lane of State Highway 1 is now closed.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternative route at this time. Access to the Wellington CBD is available via the Aotea Quay offramp.

The motorway remains open to northbound traffic.
