Chair and member positions on the Auckland District Licensing Committee (DLC) are now open, with Auckland Council encouraging applications from community-minded people who meet the requirements of the position description for the next term.

The DLC is responsible for determining all alcohol licences and managers’ certificates in Auckland including new and renewal applications. Chair and member positions will serve on the DLC from 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2026.

Julie McKee, Hearings Manager for Auckland Council, says they are looking for people who understand alcohol-related harm and how it affects Auckland’s communities.

“The role of the committee’s chair and members is to provide a quality service to the council and its customers and exercise powers and functions under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

“There are no formal qualifications required to be a DLC chair or member, however, you must have good standing in the community, the highest standard of professional and personal integrity and the necessary knowledge, skill and experience relating to matters that are likely to come before the committee,” says Julie.

While some chairs and members have legal experience, it is not a requirement.

“Above all, we are looking for people who can demonstrate impartiality and integrity and commit to the principles of natural justice and a sense of fair play.

“With the council’s obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, an understanding of Te Ao Māori is advantageous, along with a commitment to diversity and an ability to work effectively with all of Auckland’s ethnic and cultural communities.”

The DLC role is part-time, and candidates need to be available for flexible working hours.

Work will be on an ‘as required’ basis at the remuneration rate set by the Minister of Justice for a term that expires 30 June 2026.

Applications are now open and close on Sunday 4 December and must be submitted via the council’s website.

A selection panel will interview shortlisted applicants during February 2023 with successful applicants commencing the role on 01 July 2023.
