A concept plan to develop open public space and community assets on Pararekau Island in the Pahurehure Inlet has been approved.

Papakura Local Board approved the concept plan, with development to be undertaken by Karaka Harbourside Estate Ltd, with the completed assets taken on by Auckland Council.

Board Chair Brent Catchpole says the plan details work to be undertaken on an esplanade reserve and coastal walkway.

“It is a magical setting and Karaka Harbourside Estate Ltd has worked with Council officers on a plan that details esplanade reserve development, drainage reserves, a coastal walkway, lighting and furniture.

“An agreement will be entered into between Council and Karaka Harbourside Estate Ltd to record what assets are being delivered and handed over, and to clarify responsibilities and timeframes and discuss maintenance obligations.

“That is all important, but we are just delighted that a wonderful public asset will be created.”

Karaka Harbourside Estate Ltd initiated the development of Pararekau Island in 2015 when the site was rezoned to Single Housing.

Consent for the subdivision creating the 103 residential lots and various reserves was granted in 2019, with the open space being created as part of the subdivision.

It will provide access around the island, varying in width from 20-50metres or so, and will provide recreation outcomes for residents and the community.

“A seawall was originally proposed along the island’s north-western edge,” Catchpole says “But that would have impacted the coastal marine area and meant a significant maintenance cost for Council. Vesting a wider esplanade reserve, taking erosion into account over the next 100 years, is a fabulous compromise.”

The land in question is now in private ownership but will be transferred to Council.

The reserve will host a boardwalk, seats, coastal walkway lights and two causeway boardwalks enabling access, approved by the Board in a 2022 business meeting.

The concept plan is here.
