Global dairy giant the Yili Group, which operates New Zealand’s Westland Dairy Company Limited and Oceania Dairy Limited, has consolidated its position among the top five dairy companies in the world.

The annual Rabobank ranking of the Global Dairy Top 20 narrows the gap between the leading top five companies after Yili achieved 31.7 per cent annual growth with turnover of $US18.2 billion. Yili retains its position as the leading Asian dairy for the ninth consecutive year.

A spokesperson for Yili said the Rabobank Report highlights intense competition across the industry with combined turnover of the Global Dairy Top 20 companies jumping by 9.3% in US dollar terms, following the prior year’s decline of 0.1%

“Due to its acquisition of Ausnutria Dairy and strong domestic sales growth, Yili has become Asia’s first dairy producer to exceed RMB 100 billion (USD 14.85 billion) in turnover,’’ the spokesperson said.

In 2021, Yili achieved 8% growth in overseas revenue, with its products covering over 60 countries and regions across five continents. In New Zealand, Yili has upgraded production and doubled capacity of its Hokitika butter plant at Westland Milk Products, effectively expanding the market share of Westgold butter. In Indonesia, Yili’s first self-built ice cream production base has been put into production, forming a “dual center” with Thailand targeting South-East Asian consumers.

Innovation has helped Yili maintain market leadership in its long-standing core liquid milk and ice cream businesses. Parent brand Yili, subsidiary brand Satine and AMBPOMIAL all made record RMB 20 billion (USD 2.97 billion) in annual sales. Retail sales of cheese products increased 6.3% year on year in market share.

In addition to rapid growth, Yili has been collaborating across the industrial chain to enhance its partners’ global operations and sustainable development goals.

In China, its newly launched Yili Future Intelligence and Health Valley – hailed as the “Dairy Silicon Valley” – houses the world’s largest production bases in terms of production capacity, and features the highest level of digitisation and the most advanced technologies in the industry.

This year, Yili took the lead in China’s food industry by releasing its Plan for a Net-Zero Carbon Future and Roadmap to A Net-Zero Carbon Future. In addition to establishing China’s first net-zero carbon food factory, Yili has launched China’s first net-zero carbon dairy product series, including milk, yogurt, organic milk powder, and ice cream.
