A man has been injured after being shot by Police in Kaiapoi this evening.

Police were alerted to a report of a man who was allegedly threatening a member of the public with a metal bar and a knife on Williams Street near Ohoka Road at around 7:20pm.

On Police arrival, the man has allegedly attacked the Police vehicle with the metal bar.

The man has then made his way to Peraki Street where multiple tactical options where deployed including Taser and OC spray, which did not effect him.

Police have then fired multiple shots, critically injuring him.

Officers provided immediate first aid to the man until paramedics arrived on scene, after which he was transported to Christchurch Hospital where he remains.

“We understand this will be a shock to the Kaiapoi community and we want to reassure them that there is no ongoing risk,” Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price says.

“There will be an increased Police presence in the area this evening as we conduct a scene examination and make enquiries.

“This will also have a huge impact on the officers involved, their family and colleagues, and we will be providing them with support.”

As is standard practice, The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified and a Critical Incident Investigation is underway.

We would also like to thank the member of public who notified us of this incident.

Further information is not expected to be provided this evening but an update will be provided as soon as able tomorrow.
