RedBull Powder Company Ltd (RPC) is New Zealand’s leading provider of blasting services for quarries, mines, and construction sites. While they are the experts on commercial explosives, it came to their attention that their manually-run, paper-based system for business administration was hindering the business’s growth and leading to duplication, unnecessary manual work, and uncertainty.

The arrival of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns further accentuated the need for online systems, as the traditional paper-based system was not suitable when staff were working from home.

“Initially we were looking at automating our systems and reducing the paperwork across our finance department,” says Chris Pilmer, General Manager of RedBull Powder Company.

“But what we found was that the small fixes start adding up and that it would actually be better to look at the big picture and update across the board.”

Chris knew they needed professional help to lead this transformation, and engaged with multiple different quality assurance providers before deciding Qual IT was who they needed.

“Qual IT was perfect for us. They immediately stood out because of how clearly they presented their services and how responsive and helpful they were from the outset.

“They had the strategic focus we really needed. They really hit the nail on the head.”

Qual IT evaluated RPC’s current systems and processes, and then defined what was needed for now and the future.

“For us it’s about showing the client what their current state is in a way that is honest and clear, and then working with them to get to where they need to be,” says Reg Prasad, General Manager, Advisory & Northern Business at Qual IT.

“It’s really important we’re helping them make the right IT investments, and that the right processes and governance are formed to enable the strategy from the top down. That way investments can operate with longevity and minimal costs along the way.”

RPC are now working through their strategic roadmap developed with the help of a virtual Chief Information Officer from Qual IT. This roadmap specifies how RPC will achieve their day-to-day needs whilst progressing with the next stages of their transformation.

“Having an external consultant from Qual IT helping us on the ground has been fantastic,” says Chris. “Coming from outside the company means they have no baggage and can tell us freely and frankly what needs to be done.”

Success for RPC means completing the roadmap and employing a day-to-day IT Manager, which they expect to achieve in 2022.

“This digital transformation means RedBull Powder Company can achieve a lot more with the same resources,” explains Chris. “And Qual IT has been with us every step of the way.”
