Waka Kotahi is advising motorists to plan for southbound overnight motorway closures on State Highway 1 between Tawa and Churton Park scheduled for early March.

The southbound motorway lanes will be closed overnight on Wednesday 2 March, Thursday 3 March, Wednesday 9 March and Thursday 10 March from 9pm to 4am for gantry installations.

The overnight closures will allow crews to safely install 6.2 metre overhead beams, which will span the width of the southbound lanes.

Southbound traffic will detour via Middleton Road, through Westchester Drive and return to SH1 via the Churton Park/Glenside onramp.

The gantry installations are part of an ongoing programme of improvements, with a number already being installed along State Highway 1. The steel overhead beams (pictured) weigh around 2 tonnes, and will hold large electronic signs to keep motorists informed about the latest road conditions.

Waka Kotahi is helping people to navigate the state highway network safely and easily, and keep them informed about any incidents, closures or delays. The work will also improve CCTV and monitoring capabilities for Waka Kotahi to make sure the network is operating safely and efficiently.

While disruptions are expected to be minimal, motorists are advised to plan ahead. Waka Kotahi thanks drivers for their ongoing patience.

The work is dependant on weather conditions and may be postponed at short notice. Updates will be posted on the Waka Kotahi Facebook and Twitter accounts.
