Police continue to make enquiries following a fatal crash near Tawa early yesterday.
The two-vehicle crash occurred on State Highway 1 about 3.20am.
The drivers — two men aged 54 and 32 — were known to one another.
“Initial enquiries suggest the vehicles made contact while travelling side by side, above the temporary posted speed limit,” Wellington Road Policing Manager Inspector Wade Jennings says.
The 54-year-old died at the scene while the other man sustained moderate injuries.
Police were disappointed with the behaviour of several motorists who drove past the crash scene filming on their cellphones.
“While this is an offence and a serious safety risk, we also urge motorists to be mindful of the privacy and dignity of those involved,” Inspector Jennings says.
Police expect to be in a position to release the deceased man’s name later today.
