Auckland Council is a major sponsor of the Auckland Climate Festival taking place virtually from the official launch event on 12 October to 31 October, in the lead up to the UN climate change conference at the end of the month.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says, “Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial pressures that creates for us, we cannot put off action that is needed now to head off the climate change crisis that is facing the world.

“With climate warming, rising sea levels and the greater frequency of extreme weather conditions, we face huge environmental, economic and financial costs. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently warned that urgent action is required to reduce carbon emissions and keep temperature levels from rising more than 1.5 degrees. The United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, will soon reflect this message.

“I encourage Aucklanders to attend the Auckland Climate Festival and learn about how we can all work together on what is the most pressing challenge we face.”

Environment and Climate Change Committee Chair Councillor Richard Hills adds, “To prepare and respond to the climate emergency, we must be honest about the scale of transformation needed and implement the recommendations in Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland’s Climate Plan.

“Aucklanders are clear that it’s time to prioritise climate action over business as usual. Together we can create thriving and fair communities with equitable and inclusive outcomes. Reducing emissions results in better living for everyone, and we are working towards that every day.”
