For those of us who love wandering through a museum or art gallery, lockdowns can be tough as the doors are shut, and we can’t explore the incredible collections inside. That is until now. Both Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tāmaki offer virtual tours to enjoy from the comfort of home.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

The Museum has a selection of former exhibtions and galleries to virtually wander through, such as Encounters, Wild Child, and Voyage to Aotearoa.

Or if you had plans to visit the newly opened Love & Loss exhibition but lockdown ruined your plans, you can explore some of the stories online from home as well as wander through the exhibition virtually.

Auckland Art Gallery

Auckland Art Gallery Toi O Tāmaki has a couple of their recent exhibitions available to explore virtually too: Enchanted Worlds and the very popular and acclaimed Toi Tū Toi Ora. Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art is considered a landmark exhibition in the New Zealand art world and drew thousands of people to the art gallery.

Enchanted Worlds is an exhibition of 70 stunning artworks from the 250-year long Edo period of Japan’s history, where the country was in self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world.

MOTAT

Explore at your own pace as you view the spectacular collection in the Aviation Hall up close and from all angles.

Or take the kids along, if you wish, for a virtual visit to the Get Smart exhibition to learn about the growth of gaming, computers and communications over the past 200 years.

Walk through from home

If you prefer to wander around amongst nature and are missing heading to Auckland Botanic Gardens, then check out their range of walk-through videos which are like taking a guided walk with an expert.

One that is perfect to enjoy at this time of year, as we officially move into spring, is the stroll through the Spring Blossom Valley. Or perhaps you want to explore the Orchard, the Rose Gardens, or even get excited about the upcoming Sculpture in the Gardens by looking at some of the previous events that have been held.
