Society of Otago University Law Students (SOULS) Organising Sports Representative Lucy Williams says the team aren’t far off hitting their mark.
With an ambitious fundraising goal and a personal connection to the cause a group of determined Law students are ready to race in this year’s Student Relay for Life.
Aiming to raise $10,000, Society of Otago University Law Students (SOULS) Organising Sports Representative Lucy Williams says the team aren’t far off hitting their mark.
“So far we have raised almost $7,000. Previously we have had 18 runners and raised a few thousand, but this year I think we can manage more.”
Leading the team alongside Lucy is SOULS President Kelly Cumming, Tumuaki of Te Roopū Whai Pūtake (Otago Māori Law Students’ Association) Evy Ngawhika and President of Pride and Law at Otago Sophia Bothwick.
“I wanted to collaborate the approach the law team took to the relay so that we were all working together for it rather than in smaller groups. In high school, Relay for Life was our one event every year where everyone would get involved. On the day we would be exhausted but the morale was high and we felt good about doing something practical to make a difference. I wanted to bring that with to Otago Law.”
“I’ve lost loved ones to cancer and so this is something I can do every year which helps me to know I’m doing something to help a society who helped the people I loved.”
The team of law students are excited for the event but also have many fundraising opportunities organised in the lead up Kelly says.
“We have a bake sale, a quiz night and we are selling mugs which will feature some of our lecturers faces on them.”
Sophia says that the staff have been a big support to the law students in their plans to raise their biggest goal yet.
“The staff have been very engaged with us and some of them are attending the event with us or running the first lap to get us started.”
Lucy’s overall goal is that by her final year at the University, the new tradition will have inspired more people to partake in Relay for Life and continue raising money for the important work that goes into helping those with cancer.
The event is set to take place over 24 and 25 April outside the Clocktower and ending with relay runners heading to a dawn service for ANZAC Day.
